Protein bars offer a handy way to manage hunger along the way, but they can also help to feed weight losses, new research has been established.
Researchers from the University of Navarra Discovered that people who ate protein bars, stimulated with collagen – found a protein in connective tissue – have twice as much weight as those they didn’t have, despite consuming the same amount of calories.
Main researcher Dr. Paola Mogna-Peláez said that collagen is an accessible and cheap protein that you can keep fuller for longer, and an alternative to powerful weight loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy.
“Many drugs for weight loss are very expensive,” said Dr. Mogna-Peláez.
“We were interested in collagen because it is a protein that is cheap and easy to obtain and it is not known that they have side effects.”
The researchers studied 64 adult and obese adults, with a weight of approximately 13 stone on average, 20-65 years old, for a period of 12 weeks.
All participants received advice on healthy eating based on the Mediterranean diet – for the menu of fruit, vegetables and whole -grain – before the study started.
Half of the volunteers were instructed to eat two chocolate -free protein bars with 10 g collagen per day, with a glass of water for lunch and dinner.

“It is crucial that the structure of collagen can be changed to allow it to absorb extra water, which means that it grows in size,” says Dr. Mogna-Peláez out.
“We wanted to know if such a connection creates a sense of fullness when it spreads in the stomach, reduces appetite and leads to weight loss,” she added.
The adapted bars are available to buy in American supermarkets, the experts wrote.
Before the study started, the participants completed a questionnaire about their appetite and underwent a series of body measurements and other basic tests.
Participants were measured periodically during the investigation.
After 12 weeks, those who had two collagen-reinforced protein bars per day had lost twice as much weight as the control group-accompanying five pounds compared to two and a half.
Researchers also discovered that the collagen group experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure.

Those who consume collagen also lost more weight around their waist and fell 2.8 cm for 12 weeks.
They reduced their body mass index (BMI) score by 1.2 units and saw improvements in liver function.
In the meantime, the control group only fell with an average of 0.78 BMI units.
Collagen snacketers also appeared to get more muscle mass than the control group in the course of the experience.
The questionnaires also showed that the collagen reduced hunger during the day.
To confirm these results, researchers have also followed the leptin levels of the participants – a hormone that induces the feeling of full feeling.
During the 12 weeks the levels of the hunger-inducing hormone in both groups fell, but the leptin levels were higher in the collagen group at the end of the study.
In animal testing, researchers noted that collagen had a similar effect, which considerably reduced the levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite.

Dr. Mogna-Peláez said: ‘Our results indicate that the collagen felt less hungry due to swelling in the stomach, which would have led them to eat less and therefore lose weight.
‘Collagen can also have led to the participants who build muscles and we know that Spier burns more calories than fat.
“It is also possible that collagen changes the composition of bacteria in the intestine, which can help with weight loss and appetite control.”
As a study, it is presented at the European Congress for Obesity in Malaga, it turned out that the effects of GLP-1 weight loss medicines such as Ozempic are of short duration if patients do not retain a healthy lifestyle after they have no longer used medication.
