The Leafs have invested a significant amount of time in McMann’s development since he signed an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies in 2020. It has paid off, as he has emerged as a reliable utility player who can be just as effective on the top line as he is on the fourth line. Dreger says this, along with McMann’s scoring ability, means his next contract will likely have an AAV starting with a five.
“If you want to be cheap and get a discount, it’s probably 4.8, 4.9. But I would say that’s a hard score of 20 goals,” he said. “Then you have to look at some of the other traits that Bobby McMahon has brought to the table. He was developed with the Toronto Map Leafs, check that box. He has tremendous breakaway velocity, check that box. He has size? Yes.” [Craig] Berube loves him. Obviously check that box.”
Dreger later said the Leafs have a lot of reasons to want to get this deal done sooner rather than later, especially considering McMann is expected to get a significant raise this offseason. If the Leafs are unable to get a deal done before July 1, there’s a good chance he could become a hot commodity in the lightweight free agent class. In the meantime, the Leafs will continue to enjoy the value price that McMann offers across the lineup.
