The Calgary Flames’ 2025-2026 campaign has been far from ideal thus far. The team is now 1-5-0 as it looks like this will be another season where the Flames dominate the headlines.
At this point, it makes sense for the team to sell and aim for a high-depth pick. However, certain reports say otherwise. The Flames are reportedly interested in acquiring a left-shot defenseman, and according to Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff, Philadelphia Flyers player Egor Zamula is on the team’s radar.
Why would the Flames pursue Zamula?
Zamula, 25, played his junior hockey career with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. He would enter the NHL undrafted as the Flyers would take a chance on him. Zamula has since recorded 40 points in 158 career NHL games. Last season he played 63 games for the Flyers, scoring 15 points.
As mentioned in Di Marco’s tweet, the Flames may look at Zamula as a player who can help strengthen their mediocre defensive core. If the team cuts a player like Miromanov or Bean, I can see a potential trade making sense for them.
Flames beat reporter Wes Gilbertson confirmed Di Marco’s tweet, indicating the team’s interest in a left-shooting defenseman. That said, is this a step that is really necessary? Unless the Flames move players, it wouldn’t make sense to trade assets for a player like Zamula at this stage. Not to mention that Zamula isn’t even in the Flyers’ top four defensemen right now. So it would be redundant to trade for another bottom-pairing defenseman unless the team believes he can take on a bigger role. Regardless, the Flames have been looking for a left-shooting defenseman since the offseason, so it should come as no surprise that they are currently weighing their options.
