Hundreds of homes will become available to house hunters in a growing Riverland town as the council races to open up the sought-after land.

Renmark Paringa Council will expand its community wastewater management system to Renmark West, allowing more than 500 homes to be built in the untapped area.

The project will not only help provide land for Renmark’s growing population, but also meet the increasing demand from people looking to move to the district.

Mayor Peter Hunter said development requests to the council and pressure on land supply were clear indications that people wanted to live in Renmark.

Hundreds of new homes could be built in Renmark West following a commitment for a $3 million wastewater management expansion.

“Our community is growing, demand for housing is high and people are choosing Renmark to build their lives,” he said.

“This project is a stepping up of the community and delivering the infrastructure needed to support that growth and provide quality options for people to buy land and call Renmark home.”

Renmark West is an important growth area on the edge of the Riverland city and has capacity for more than 500 new allotments.

Development in the area has been limited for more than a decade due to planning restrictions around wastewater systems and groundwater conditions on site.

Mr Hunter said the expansion had removed one of the biggest barriers to development in the area.

“This investment means families, workers and retirees will have more choice, more affordability and more opportunities to settle in our region,” he said.

Preliminary estimates show the project will cost approximately $3 million and will be financed through borrowing, with costs recouped over time through developer contributions to ensure taxpayers are not burdened.

Renmark Paringa Council chief executive Tony Siviour said investing in essential infrastructure now meant they could help meet growing demand for housing and further support it in the future.

Similar problems have arisen in South Africa in recent years as demand for housing increases.

Three developers came together last year to come up with a government-backed solution to get a roof over the heads of about 10,000 people more quickly.

Developers Lanser, Fairland and 23 North Developments joined forces to create a private wastewater solution in Angle Vale after works and sales were suspended in three projects due to a lack of a suitable sewerage system.

It would provide a permanent sewerage solution to 4000 new homes two years sooner than they would have if they had waited for the SA Water connection, with developers bearing the costs.
