Yes, you heard that right. The Cincinnati Reds had their franchise star shortstop play more than two months with a torn quad. One of the biggest things talked about in the second half of the year was that De La Cruz simply saw his power disappear. It was said he was dealing with a quad injury, but it wasn’t until Wednesday night that it became public that he actually tore his quad.
The first thing here is that De La Cruz is probably a really tough guy, because there’s no way that playthrough could have been comfortable. But the second is just a matter of how you get someone to play that, let alone the guy you hope can not only build your franchise for years to come, but the guy you hope can lead your team to where it wants to go.
The decision making involved is questionable at best. Risking even more injuries for De La Cruz seems absolutely insane. Everyone involved can count themselves lucky that things haven’t gotten any worse. There should probably be some internal reflection on all of this from the organization, because it’s hard to really figure out that not only did they let him play through those types of injuries, but it got to the point where it’s now November 19th and he’s still rehabbing the injury. That’s coming from someone who never went to medical school but stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, so take it for what it’s worth.
