The Detroit Red Wings were reportedly prepared to make an important range of Aaron Ekblad this summer, but the two-time Stanley Cup champion eventually signed again at the Florida Panthers for a discount deal for $ 6.1 million per season.

Ekblad was an option, and there was some doubt above the free desk that he would find his way back to the Panthers. He wanted to stay, but money would be tight if Florida would keep all three Ekblad, Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand. They found a way to do it, but Ekblad was perhaps the only player of the three who took a discount.

Ekblad was not the only player who pursued the red wings. Reports indicate that the Red Wings also showed interest in players such as Nikolaj Ehlers, although he was not willing to meet them.
Mirtle notes that Detroit is no longer the most important destination for unlimited free agents. The lack of success and confusion about the ‘Yzerplan’ has made UFAs of Top -class hesitant to sign. Mirtle writes: “The biggest thing that works against the Red Wings, and the reason that they have to pay lower talent too much to add free agents is that they have just not been competitive enough.”
They have strong young talent, but many believe they waste the best years of players such as Dylan Larkin, Simon Edvinsson and Marco Kasper. Adding a tent of free agent as Ekblad would have helped. It could be why Yzerman was willing to spend great, even if the offer of the free agency is not officially known.
