The Red Sox seemingly achieved that goal with a few trades. Sonny Gray was acquired from the Cardinals to slot behind top prospect Garrett Crochet and provide a formidable 1-2 punch atop the rotation. Johan Oviedo, acquired in a trade with the Pirates, added depth to the middle of the rotation.
Despite these moves, the Red Sox weren’t done yet. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports this that the Red Sox have reached a deal with pitcher Ranger Suarez. According to Bob Nightengale of USA TodaySuarez will receive a five-year contract worth $130 million.
Ranger Suarez helps improve an impressive Red Sox rotation
Suarez had a solid performance for the Phillies last season. He posted a 3.20 ERA and a 1.220 WHIP over his 157.1 innings, striking out 151 batters with 38 walks. Suarez was also excellent in the postseason, posting a 1.48 ERA and a 1.055 WHIP in 42.2 playoff innings.
Adding Suarez gives the Red Sox what might be the best rotation in baseball. Suarez, Gray and Oviedo will likely be the second, third and fourth starters respectively. Brayan Bello will likely fill the fifth starter role, with prospects Payton Tolle and Connelly Early waiting in the wings.
Likewise, adding Suarez could allow the Red Sox to fill other holes on the roster using their impressive pitching depth. Second and third base are question marks, especially with Alex Bregman heading to Chicago. The Red Sox could use a right-handed outfielder to balance out a predominantly left-handed group. Suarez could have a ripple effect on the roster as the Red Sox will likely focus on their lineup for the remainder of the offseason.
