The Red Sox made their first exchange before the MLB -Handelsdeadline on Thursday and Landed Southpaw Steven Matz from the cardinals in a deal St. Louis announced early on Thursday morning.

The cardinals received Infielder Blaze Jordan, Boston’s no. 17 prospect, According to the prospect ranks of MLB.com.

Matz, 34, is in the Majors in his 11th season and is now in a Bullpen roll after serving the majority of his career as a starter.

He has added 172 career with the Mets, Blue Jays and Cardinals, but only had two this season while he relieved 30 times.

Matz is 5-2 with an ERA of 3.44 and a 1.18 whip (walks and hits per innings) this season with 55 innings, while posting an ERA of 3.91 and held batter people on a .711 OPS as a Reliever.

He is in the last year of the four -year contract that he signed with St. Louis.
