Red Sox acquire Willson Contreras from Cardinals after missing Pete Alonso

After failing to land Pete Alonso, the Red Sox have turned to another option at first base.

Boston acquired Willson Contreras from the Cardinals, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed — with pitchers Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita returning to St. Louis in the deal. according to ESPN.

Contreras, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Cubs and the past three with the Cardinals, reportedly waived his no-trade clause. according to MassLive.

He caught for most of his career, earning three All-Star honors at the position, but in 2025 he switched to first base and played in 120 games – with 119 starts – there for St. Louis. He also hit .257 with a .791 OPS, 20 home runs and 80 RBIs.

And after watching Alonso bolt from the Mets to the Orioles for a five-year, $155 million contract, the Red Sox — who offered the slugger fewer years and “significantly less” money due to his age, according to the Boston Globe — had to fill that spot in the lineup.

In addition to a division rival strengthening its lineup in the offseason when Brian Cashman has remained quiet thus far, the trade will also impact the Yankees’ rivalry with the Red Sox due to Dobbins’ upset last year.

He told the Boston Herald that “if the Yankees were the last time I got a contract, I would retire” and made up a story that his father had been drafted twice by the organization and was friends with longtime Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte.

But The Post’s Joel Sherman revealed that Dobbins’ father never had any connection to the Yankees and that he was not close to Pettitte.

“The whole backstory, it was things that I had heard growing up and seen pictures of, from my dad,” Dobbins said after the story broke. “… At the end of the day, I’m not going to fact-check my dad or anything like that.”
