Max Verstappen says that he has shown Red Bull that he will always give everything for the team with his performances after winning the sprint at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Red Bull’s first racing weekend without Christian Horner when Team Principal went early on Saturday, with Verstappen who caught up with Oscar Piastri and won the sprint. The Dutchman, who later qualified in fourth place for the Grand Prix himself, says that Red Bull will always get full commitment from him even without his victory.
“The team can always count on me,” said Verstappen. “They will always get my best, whoever is in charge. They know that. I never keep it back or something. I always try to give them the best possible result, and that is also what they pay for me. It is certainly positive. We naturally need positive energy, and that is a great start for us.”
By giving Laurent Mekies a victory in the first competitive race as Red Bull Team Principal, says Verstappen that little has changed since Horner was fired, but that the early atmosphere has been positive.
“It is very difficult to suddenly say within two weeks that many things have to change from nothing,” he said. “It’s about starting the relationship and just understanding how everyone works. Then you come to see conclusions and maybe you want to change something, and this is something that will happen in the coming weeks.
“Really early days, but so far he is very enthusiastic and very motivated, and that is exactly what you want. I was very good at thinking with him. It was a very good start.”
The momentum got somewhat stuck with Verstappen finished in fourth place in qualifying after an error in his final round, but he says that there were more performance available, which made him feel that he would be able to get third place on Sunday for third place.
“Q3 was not very good for whatever reason,” he said. “The first set just didn’t have the same grip. When you normally make a nice progression, I couldn’t do it at all, and in the second set we tried something and it in principle failed, unfortunately because I already started the round, I had so much wheel spider that I could not put the power down. Then I couldn’t put the power down. Then the same thing that has already losing me fourth gear.
“Now, even because they are not completely happy with the balance and losing 0.2s in turn 1, it actually looks very good, but it was just not what I had hoped. The balance is not where I want it to be attacked here.
