Real Madrid star Courtois slams Mourinho over Vini’s comments

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has criticized Jose Mourinho for his comments about Vinicius Junior after he was allegedly racially abused by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni.

Last week’s meeting between the two teams in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League play-offs was temporarily suspended after Vinicius reported the incident to referee François Letexier.

UEFA have handed Prestianni a provisional one-match ban while their investigation is ongoing, meaning he will miss the second leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Prestianni is said to have called Vinicius a ‘monkey’ in Spanish, but reports say he told UEFA he used a homophobe instead.

“It looks like he said it, and that is just as serious,” Courtois said at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. “Homophobic insults are unacceptable, just like what happened in the stands in Lisbon. A player can put you on the wrong foot, but such gestures are shameful. Racism and homophobia are equally unacceptable.”

Courtois thinks anti-racism rules in football are “improving”, but believes racist gestures from spectators in the stands should lead to the game being stopped.

“Ultimately it is up to Vinicius to decide whether the match will go ahead,” he said. “If he says no, we will consider leaving. UEFA will decide the rest.”

“But the stands? That’s a reason to stop the match and remove the offenders. A player shouldn’t see that; it’s the referee’s responsibility and the authorities should be called. We need to stop being so foolish as a society.”

Courtois also took umbrage with Mourinho’s suggestion that Vini Jr. had himself to blame for celebrating his winning goal too much.

The Belgium international said: “Mourinho is Mourinho. As a coach you always defend your club and your players. What disappoints me is the use of Vinicius’ celebration.”

“Vinicius did nothing wrong; he celebrated like any player would against us. When you score at Real Madrid, the reaction for most teams is double or triple. We have to move on, but celebration cannot justify alleged racism.”
