“Shame on you, Metroline,” says reader

Bus driver Mark Hehir was fired for “bringing his company into disrepute” – for chasing and hitting a robber who had taken a passenger’s chain (Metro, Friday).

Police said the ‘hero’ – who recovered the woman’s jewelery – used ‘proportionate force’ to defend himself after the criminal threw the first punch.

But his bosses at London’s Metroline said Hehir had used “excessive force” to restrain the thief until police arrived.

Shame on you, Metrolijn. Mr. Hehir is a hero and should be rewarded for his courage. It’s disgusting that he lost his job. Stevie D, London

This reader agrees

The police, who are the experts here, supported Mark Hehir, so he should have been praised and rewarded by his employer. We need decent men like Mr Hehir to stand up to criminals.

And we should be ashamed of the employment tribunal supporting the bus company; all it has done is support the rogue status that we seem to be plagued with in Britain at the moment. Nick, Luton

‘It’s hard to be surprised at the state of crime in our capital when those who act to stop robberies are punished,’ says reader

Mark Hehir was fired for “bringing the company into disrepute by assaulting a passenger” and for “failing to protect himself and his passengers” by leaving the bus to give chase.

However, witnessing the theft of a passenger’s necklace and then recovering it could reasonably be viewed as protecting a passenger and should not be neglected. Furthermore, it is unrealistic to suggest that someone who steals a necklace will be chased and have the jewelry returned to them, then calmly return to shake hands with the victim, as the bus company argued.

It’s hard to be surprised at the state of crime in our capital when individuals who act to stop robberies are punished, while offenders walk away without consequences. Eric Lee-Mather, Woking

The soap Emmerdale (Farm, as it once was) has become a seedy corner of dirty TV.

The producers should follow the example of Heartbeat, which stayed true to its original goal of depicting life in a rural setting with crime and comedy combined. Watching Emmerdale and all its filth and violence is a sad encouragement of what society supposedly wants.Paddy Cawkwell, Doncaster

Reader mentions ‘obscene’ amounts paid to water investors

As for the announcement that water companies will increase their prices from April (Metro, Friday), ostensibly to solve the appalling pollution of our waterways – rather than penalizing again those who can least afford it, the answer to the ‘shortage’ of funding would be to reduce the obscene amounts paid to investors.Rob, York
