The leader in the Wildcard tier was @ColbyConway!

Here is the final RazzBowl7 Championship level:

I didn’t mention this last week, but half of our championship finalists placed 10th or higher. No one drafted first or second, and only three drafted in the top half of the first round. A way to make a “disadvantage” work for you!

And now the postscript I promised last week.

I finally found a way to see what happened with our playoffs. Unfortunately, this meant I had to wait for each round to start. We had a rules page for all competitions, which disappeared when the play-offs started.

I have to confess: I’ve never gotten far enough in the three other RazzBowls I’ve participated in to have any idea if this has always been the case.

On the rules page, the playoffs would start with the top two or three best teams (both conditions are unfortunately on the rules page) in each division after the regular season ended, advancing to the first championship level for the playoffs.

That statement was a warning sign, but I didn’t expect it to be just the first.

Below is how the posted rules implied the playoffs would proceed:

EXPECTED

Round To soften Teams Camp Stay To go Wild card To go Stay Elim
1 11-13 100 or 120 40 or 60 30 10 or 30 60 6 40 14 or 34
2 14 86 36 20 16 50 4 20 26
3 15 60 24 14 10 36 2 11 23
4 16 37 16 9 7 21 1 6 14
5 17 23 10 13

Round 1 would last three weeks. The ‘Teams’ column shows the number of teams participating in each round. “Champ” is the number of teams in the Championship level, “Stay” is the number of teams advancing in the Championship level for the next round, and “Go” is the number of teams advancing to the Wildcard level. “Wildcard” is the number of teams in the Wildcard tier at the start of each round. ‘Go’ is the number of teams that would advance to the Championship level for the next round, ‘Stay’ is the number of teams that would remain in the Wildcard level, and ‘Elim’ is the number of teams that would leave the tournament at the end of the round.

“EXPECTED” is not what happened.

Round 2 started at the beginning of week 13. Okay. But the presentation for round 2 was different. At the start of each round I went through all the tables, which I couldn’t see until the week’s matches had started and the data was being filled in. I have come up with a scenario that I call “IMPLICITED” because I derived it from the tables presented in NFFC:

IMPLIED

Round To soften Teams Camp Stay To go Wild card To go Stay Elim
1 Unknown 100 40 30 10 60 6 40 14
2 Unknown 100 36 20 16 64 4 20 40
3 15 100 24 14 10 76 2 16 58
4 16 90 16 9 7 74 1 6 57
5 17 37 12 25

This was based on the cutting lines presented for each round.

“IMPLIED” is not what happened.

Only by looking back could I summarize what happened from round to round, and that’s what I show below:

HAPPENED

Round To soften Teams Camp Stay To go Wild card To go Stay Elim
1 11-12 100 40 16 24 60 20 40 0
2 13-14 100 36 14 22 64 10 54 0
3 15 100 24 10 14 76 6 60 10
4 16 90 16 11 5 74 1 20 53
5 17 37 12 25

If this confuses you, then you’ve arrived where I arrived. For the most part, the number of teams in the Championship tier followed the rules page, but the distribution of the tiers varied. Only after round 3 were any teams eliminated.

I have what I think is a simple first goal for RazzBowl8: consistent coverage. If we ask you to participate in our tournament, we must be clear about what will happen during the tournament.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us at RazzBowl7, and you will receive invitations to RazzBowl8. Goal two is to give people more time to register and recruit more people to join us.
