NEW YORK- The National Hockey League announced this today Ray Shero has been appointed as the recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy from 2025 for excellent Hockey service in the United States.
The annual prize, one of the most prestigious in Hockey, was presented in 1966 by the New York Rangers to the National Hockey League. It honors the memory of Lester Patrick, who spent 50 years in Hockey as a player, coach and general manager and a pioneer in the development of sport.
Shero, a resident of Saint Paul, MN, who died on April 9 at the age of 62, spent 13 seasons as general manager of NHL, including a Stanley Cup Championship season with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008-09. He also served as GM of the New Jersey DevilishIn addition to long stints like a director at the Ottawa SenatorsNashville Predators and Minnesota Wild.
“The inheritance of Ray Shero as NHL director is immortalized by the engraving of his name on the Stanley Cup and the success of the players he has scouted, drawn up and traded in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Ottawa, Nashville Bettman,” said Nhl Commissionererer. “His contributions to the growth of the game in the United States are remarkable and extensive in the same way – from the captain of his team at St. Lawrence University to helping to collect 13 American world championships to serve an associated general manager for the American Olympic team 2014.

“His true legacy, however, will be like a man who embodied the best of our game: fierce competition on ice and the welcome of fellowship of the ice. Alplated by hockey for his team building insight and an eye for talent, he was still loved to treat everyone Fortunate enough to know him.”
After a four-year-old gaming career at St. Lawrence University, Shero worked for seven years as a player agent before he became assistant-albuming director of the Senators in 1993. He spent five seasons in that position before he went to the same role with the Predators in 1998. After helping the Predators Through their first eight years of their existence, Shero was hired as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins In 2006.
Shero helped to build the Penguins Squad, which went to successive Stanley Cup final in 2008 and 2009 and the victory came out at the Detroit Red Wings in the second of those two trips to conquer the third Stanley Cup of the franchise. His eight-year term in Pittsburgh also included recognition by the NHL as the winner of 2012-13 of the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award, after a season in which the Penguins Finished with the best record of the Eastern Conference and a franchise record .750 points percentage registered (36-12-0 in 48 GP).
After his time with the PenguinsShero became executive vice president and general manager of the Devilish 4 May 2015. Under his contributions for nearly five full seasons in that role, supervision of the selections of Franchise -Hoekstenen Jack Hughes (in the NHL concept of 2019) and Nico Hiscer (in the NHL concept of 2017), as well as the Acquisition of Taylor Hall, which would go for the MVP season in 2016, Devilish in 2017-18.
Shero’s last NHL -Rol started in June 2021, when he became a member of the Wild As a senior adviser to the General Manager, a position he still held at the time of his death.
