Ravindra Jadeja has confirmed that he will play for Saurashtra in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, a move that could decide his limited future.
The 37-year-old is expected to play two group matches, against Services on January 6 and Gujarat on January 8, both in Alur. For now, this is the clear plan, with Jadeja keen to get game time under his belt.
However, his availability could change if he is picked for India’s ODI series against New Zealand. The Indian squad will meet in Vadodara ahead of the first ODI on January 11, which may overlap with its domestic commitments.
These Vijay Hazare matches come at a crucial time for Jadeja. He is trying to hold on to his place in India’s white-ball lineup, with competition for the all-rounder position becoming increasingly tight.
Jadeja was left out of the ODI squad for the tour of Australia, a notable omission after years of being the first choice. He returned to the squad in South Africa but had an average series, taking just one wicket in three matches and scoring 56 runs in two innings.
In his absence, Axar Patel has made the most of his opportunities. Axar’s steady batting and consistent left-arm spin have cemented his position as the preferred option in ODIs.
With limited places available, especially for comparable all-rounders, performance at domestic level is now more important than ever. India is unlikely to play two like-for-like left-arm spin all-rounders together, especially considering future events.
A strong performance from Saurashtra could keep Jadeja firmly in the discussion for major tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup. However, a quiet outing could tip the balance even further in Axar’s favour.
India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has already spoken about the situation and made it clear that Jadeja is still in the plans but faces real competition.
“Yes, he has confirmed that he will play these two matches on January 6 and 8. This is the plan for now,” said a Saurashtra official, underlining that the focus is on match practice.
Agarkar also pointed to team balance and conditions as key factors in selection, pointing out that every spot now has to be earned and not assumed.
