Rasmus Andersson is currently playing some of the best hockey this season – and may be reaching career highs. His increased production is fueling more trade talks and he is commenting on the state of his future with the team.
The Flames blueliner has exploded offensively with 14 points in his last ten games, higher production than some of the best forwards in the NHL. Its stock is rising rapidly and rival teams are watching.
The story remains that Andersson and the Flames are “not close” to an extension. The belief is that the 29-year-old defenseman wants something on the order of eight years for $8 million or more, and the Flames are concerned about that kind of commitment. Both parties must ask themselves what is best and whether this new level of production is something that can be expected in the long term.
Andersson denies having made any decision
Andersson pushed back on recent reports He wonders if he knows if he’s leaving or staying. Some media reported that he had made up his mind.
“How would they know?” Andersson said this on Friday. “I spoke to my agent before the season started and we haven’t talked since. I’ve gotten to the point where I just laugh at the things people say online.”
Head coach Ryan Huska praised Andersson for keeping his focus and not letting the noise ruin his season. In fact, he could make the most of his situation, which is a key motivator for some players on expiring deals. “He knows his contract is up… but he hasn’t let that affect him. He’s come to the rink every day and done his job.”
Andersson noted: “I try to control what I can control…enjoy being with the boys and don’t worry about what’s going to happen tomorrow.”
