Rare Caddy rules Blunder ends our Middle-AM Match in Playoff

One of the most back and forth, competitive duels of the opening round of competition game on the 44th US Mid-Amateur Championship Eventually ended without one of the two players who hit a shot.

Ryan O’Rear and Paul Mitzel both went through the US Mid-Amateur-O’Rear stroke game area was a shot of co-medalistic distinctions and they were linked to each other for the round of 64 match-play portion on Monday in Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Mitzel, who comes from Seattle, was 1 early, but won the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes to go up after five. That was the biggest lead in the roller coaster competition, which Mitzel later tied with a Birdie on the Par-5 17th. They both made par at 18 to force extra holes.

They played the par-4 1e and tied with pars, but the game ended in the next hole, the par-4 2nd and neither of the players hit a shot.

Mitzel’s Caddy rode in a golf cart of the 19th Green to the 20th T-shirt, which led to a loss of hole (and ultimately the match) per model Local Rule G-6. The rule states: “During a round, a player or caddy may not drive any form of motorized transport, except as authorized or later approved by the committee … … If the infringement occurs between the game of two holes, it applies to the next hole.”

According to Brentley Romine from Golf ChannelWho spoke with Mitzel after the incident, the Walking Rules officer called the penalty. The opponent of Mitzel, O’Rear, asked if he could express the ruling to continue the match, but the request was refused.

Mitzel told Golf Canal that after the 19th-Hole draw, his Caddy put the flagstick in it and then a shuttle driver asked if he wanted to go a ride to the next tee. The same driver had just finished grabbing the players from the 18th hole to the 1st tee for the play -off.

“My Caddy does not earn any mistake,” Mitzel said Golf canal. “He is the man and a great friend. I would do the same in his shoes. We had so much fun, it’s a shame.”

O’Rear, from Georgetown, Texas, went on to the Tour of 32, which will take place on Tuesday.

Although a loss of hole (and match) like this is rare, it happened earlier in high -level tournaments. In 2023, six players were punished for making unauthorized shuttle rides from a green to a Tee -Box in the Lecom Suncoast Classic of the Korn Ferry Tour.
