In this episode of Tech Talks Daily I made Raj Samani, chief scientist at Rapid7, to unpack the rapidly evolving world of ransomware. RAJ has been in the front line of cyber crime reaction for years and has seen first -hand how these attacks have become more and more professional. Beyond are the days of casual ransomware that are notes that ask for a few hundred dollars. Nowadays, these groups work as fully formed companies with help desks, R&D teams and carefully designed extortion models.
We talked about how ransomware has become more of a reputation risk than just a technical one. RAJ has shared that CEOs are often more concerned about data that is extracted and leaked to the press than about systems that are locked. It is no longer just about repairing files. It is about trust, public perception and the long tail of brand damage.
One of the most revealing parts of our discussion was how these attacks usually unfold. Raj led me through Real-World scenarios where criminals have stayed in networks for months before launching their last load. He also described how careful planning, coordinated operating days and threat information the kill chain of an attacker can disrupt before irreversible damage is done.
We have investigated the uncomfortable truth that many organizations are still falling victims of basic attacks due to poor cyber hygiene. Although the landscape of the threat becomes more advanced with the use of zero-day vulnerabilities and social engineering, many infringements are still happening by exposed RDP havens or convincing phishing attempts.
Raj also offered candid insights into the ethics and complexity of ransomware negotiations, why prohibiting payments can be counterproductive and what companies should do in the first few hours after they discovered that they were affected. He made it clear that cyber security is no longer just an IT problem. It influences everything, from supply chains to public services and daily life.
Is your organization prepared at the moment when ransomware of the care of the board room moves the crisis of the boardroom?
