A rape survivor has said that she is afraid that Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, will “hunt her” after his release from prison. Brueckner will be released in September from a German prison after a seven-year imprisonment for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman.
In October 2024 he was acquitted of raping Hazel Behan, 41, and another woman and girl in Portugal, and waited for the result of an appeal from the Supreme Court that was submitted by Mrs Behan, who disputed the investigation of the Portuguese authorities for the crime. The resident of Dublin was violently attacked three years before the disappearance of Madeleine in an apartment in Praia da Rocha. “His punishment can end, but mine never did it,” she said Sun. “I lived with fear every day for 21 years. Fear that I will see him. Fear that he will find out where I live and look for me.”
“I am also afraid that he will do someone else what he did to me,” Mrs Behan added. “I called him on a public forum and I have genuine concern [that] He could confront me.
“I would not place anything past a person like him. If he is released, I will worry about every woman and child who, like me, believes that the right system protects them. A leopard does not change his stains.”
Despite officers of justice who call the 48-year-old Brueckner as the only suspect in the disappearance of the four-year-old Madeleine of Praia da Luz in 2007, he denies any involvement and must not be charged yet.
The German police concluded a three -day search for the area around the Huis van Brueckner near the resort where she had stayed with her family last week after it reportedly did not deliver new findings.
“If he is released in September, he can go wherever he wants,” said Behan. “The police can only get involved in protecting me when he comes to my garden.
“The system may be ready to let him go, but I am not. And the broader society is not that it deserves to feel safe.”
She also expanded her sympathy for the McCann family, who marked 18 years since the disappearance of their daughter from a hotel room while ate in the neighborhood last month.
“As a parent, I cannot imagine what they have experienced and I will continue every day for the past 18 years,” she added.
