Rahul Dravid’s abrupt resignation as the Rajasthan Royals head coach has fueled a new control of the internal operation of the franchise.
The royals officially said that he was taken for ‘personal reasons’ after he had a broader role. But reports suggest differently, pointing to disagreements about captain choices and Dravid’s dissatisfaction with the direction of the franchise.
Dravid, who again joined RR before the IPL 2024, ended his Stint after a bad 2025 campaign where the team finished ninth. Although he was fresh from India’s T20 World Cup triumph as a head coach, his return to the Royals barely lasted a season.
According to PTI, the “wider role” was essentially an offside, which limited its influence on team construction and leadership decisions. An important flash point seems to be the intention of the royals to promote Riyan Parag as a captain.
Parag filled in when Sanju Samson was injured but did not make a tactical impression. After a strong season 2024 with 573 points, his 2025 output fell to 393 runs.
Nevertheless, RR sees him as central in their brand expansion in the northeast, with Guwahati as their second home.
However, Dravid is supposed to have given preference to a merit -based approach, in which players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel were seen as stronger leadership candidates. Both are tribes in the attitude of India and are generally considered as future leaders.
The expected exit of Samson has only fueled the gap. Dravid, who has long supported the Kerala seizure, reportedly felt uncomfortable with the lack of clarity about his future in the franchise.
The 52-year-old has chosen the silence, but his sudden exit raises questions about RR’s handling of one of the most respected spirits of Cricket.
For the franchise, the challenge is now not only finding a new head coach, but also deciding whether they stay with Parag or hand over the reins to a more established artist like Jaiswal.
