Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek’s Run in the US Open Mixed Doubles event ended a step under the trophy, but they could not let the moment pass without a small tribute to the player who helped them.
After their defeat against defensive champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in the final, Ruud and Swiatek were asked about their chemistry on the field. The answer soon turned into a nod to the values and personality characteristics that they both feel that they learned from Rafael Nadal.
“Iga and I both played mixed doubles in the United Cup in the past. We have some experience, but not together,” said Ruud. “I think we had good chemistry. We are similar people. We are easy to deal with. Iga is modest.”
Swiatek smiled and interrupted: “Rafa’s children.”
“I think that’s what some say. Easy to get along with each other, click and find good chemistry,” Ruud added.
Both players have long been open about their admiration for Nadal, the former number 1 player in the PIF ATP ranking and 22 times large champion. Ruud trained extensively at the Academy of the Spaniard in Mallorca as a teenager and learned to reflect his intensity and Vechtgeest.
Swiatek has often spoken about Nadal as her role model and not only admires his competitiveness, but also his humility, something she tried to pursue in her own career. In many ways, the band of Ruud and Swiateek came from that shared foundation as partners in New York.
Despite the fact that the only singles stars have been left in the field, the third seeds Errani and Vavassori pushed to a tight final of three set. Yet it was the seasoned Italian doubles who simply turned out to be too sharp at the crucial moments.
Errani’s choice of precision above the power on serve – often landing 70 km / h first serves – problems caused during the tournament, and Ruud was asked about her unique style.
“It’s a different look, yes. You get a little more used to it, but it’s just a mix of her at a different pace and that he moves incredibly well. They know each other well. They play every slam together. They fit well,” Ruud replied.
“It was pretty fun and frustrating to see that we give back for forehand if we didn’t hold it. It is too [credit] To Andrea for moving on the net so quickly and well. ‘
Ruud and Swiatek will now shift their attention to the singles events, which start on Sunday. Ruud, the 2022 US Open finalist, enters the tournament with a 28-11 record at tour level in 2025, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss index.
Swiatek, the 2022 US Open Champion, comes fresh from her title run by Cincinnati. Yet the experience of their joint run in mixed Doubles left an impression.
“It was great to have the chance to play mixed doubles. It is always fun, but especially with Casper. I think we have made a great team,” said Swiatek.
Ruud added: “It was an honor and really nice to share the court with Iga and other players.”
