January is National Radon Action Month!
What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. Radon in soil can enter your home through foundation cracks, construction joints, holes in the floor and pipes, pumps and drains.
Although radon is present in the air outdoors, it can become dangerous when it concentrates indoors. The EPA has found radon to be leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
How can you take action?
It’s easy to test your home for radon. The EPA recommends mitigation if radon levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L but also recommends considering mitigation for levels between 2.0 pCi/L and 4.0 pCi/L.
The EPA, the CDC, and the State of Oregon, Oregon Health Authority have excellent resources for learning more about radon and how you can take action!
