Racing Stable daily life stories in December: new beginnings and Christmas spirit
Exciting new syndicate opportunity!
We are about to start a brand new racing syndicate with a budget of around £10,000 for a horse. We are looking for up to 20 members with flexible options:
- £500 to purchase, then £100 per month (5%)
- £1,000 to purchase, then £200 per month (10%)
- And so on!
Let me know if you’d like to get involved or if you know someone who might be interested. It’s a brilliant way to get involved in racehorse ownership!
A busy week full of racing and discoveries
It’s been a hectic week! First came Rocky (Kingston Rock) And Little Alki at Hexham. Rocky was 7/11 and I wasn’t happy with him at all. His feet have been x-rayed, and he needs to rebalance them because it’s damaging his joints. The vet is coming tomorrow so I hope we’ll be there to help him realize his potential – Nathan said he absolutely hated galloping around the hills, which explains a lot!
Meanwhile, Wee Alki was 5/9 and is heading towards his final novice to complete his handicap. Once he is in his own classroom, I expect much better results. Nathan was very happy with his progress; young horses just need a little more time to come into their own.
Then came our busy Saturday! Josh took Dancer Unpleasant Newcastle where we hoped to see improvement, and we did! He still has a way to go, but he has run well and jumped brilliantly a long way. He immediately hung the house, and we are investigating why that is the case.
Little AlkiIn the meantime I went to Doncaster with the mighty Velasco. He behaved beautifully for Bekah and me when saddling, but was a bit on his toes in the paddock. Then he showed us that last season’s Velasco was back – just down to fourth at the eleventh hour, but what a really good run!
Next year we have decided to raise money for two charities:
We already have some exciting gifts to auction at the Summer Owners Event!
Upcoming dates:
- December 17 Catterick – Atomic Angel for Daryl & Shaun (Castle View)
- December 21 Haydock – Champ Royal for The Northern Racing Club
Staff parties, wind operations and festive races
The staff had their own Christmas party this year – funny how Josh and Jamie managed to get invited to both parties! I would like to thank everyone who gave gifts to staff this year. They really appreciate the thought, especially on those windy, wet days when they do their best for our horses.
Atomic Angel showed she still has the will to win when she came just third in an amateur race ridden by Natasha Cookson, who rides for us.
It was a strange race – the Kirby horse definitely improved tremendously and won, but only just. Should the rest have gone with him?
The stewards asked the same question and the second, third and fourth all received a warning. Rough, I thought, because no one could tell if Angel would have lasted at home if she had gone at his speed.
Atomic angelNathan, who is proving to be a real asset to the yard with eight winners for us so far, jumped up and down until we Velasco for a second opinion on his breathing. We went to see wind energy market leader Ben Brain in Cheltenham, only to discover that Velasco was a previous customer!
In short, the overhead scope did not show the problem at home because it is not under the same pressure as during a race. Lesson learned! He will be a much happier horse in his next race. Jamie left at 4am and returned at 9.30pm – a long day for both horses and people.
Champion Royal had overcome obstacles again Haydock and much happier, albeit a disappointing fifth. Either he is at the peak of his abilities and needs the handicapper to help him drop a few pounds (he put up 25 pounds with us last year), or he needs more energy to complete his races. Work in progress! He goes to a lower race on January 9.
Champion RoyalRacing Stable Daily life stories in December: looking ahead to the new year
Unfortunately no runners during the holidays, but we have plenty from the 29th! Little Alki comes out of its ‘loan period’ and goes on sale at the end of January.
Hopefully by then he will show in his own classroom what he is capable of with a disability. I’d like to set up a little partnership to buy him back from the yard (currently he belongs to Josh and his friend David in Ireland) as he’s a tough little cookie.
His ‘borrowers’, Race4Fun and The Nelson Partnership, now have their own horses in training again.
Dates:
- 29th Kelso – Wee Alki in his last novice before his handicap mark
- 1st Southwell – Sunset Hill
- 1st Catterick – Atomic Angel (P)
- 2nd year – Pinot Rouge
- 3rd Musselburgh – Beyond the Edge
- 4th Newcastle – Blame Rose and Les’s Legacy
- 9th Catterick – maybe Atomic Angel/Blame Rose and Champ Royal
- 11th – Rock Steady Eddie
As we enter the Christmas holidays and look forward to 2025, I would like to thank you all for your support this year.
It’s been a year of incredible highs and heartbreaking lows: from charity successes and brilliant victories to Amanda’s accident and the loss of Jimlis. But despite everything you were there, and that means the world to me and the whole team.
Here’s to a new year full of hope, winners and wonderful moments with all of you.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
