The Vancouver Canucks lost again on Monday night and are last in the NHL in points percentage, so how much longer will Quinn Hughes be able to handle this? The Edmonton Oilers love Tristan Jarry, but a deal is complicated, and the New Jersey Devils are aggressively scouring the trade market, whether for Hughes or other big players.
Let’s dive into all that and more in the latest edition of the NHL trade buzz.
The latest on Quinn Hughes and the Canucks
After snapping a four-game losing streak that included an impressive 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night, the Canucks came back down to earth Monday night and shutout the Detroit Red Wings 4-0, wiping out the good vibes.
Hughes’ pointless goal drought stretched to six games, and you have to wonder how much weight his future weighs on him, especially considering the number of landing spots that have been rumored lately.
Vancouver has had conversationtalks with New Jersey about sending Hughes to play with his brothers, though a deal is far from guaranteed. The Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers are lurking in the weeds, while Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins have also emerged, given their stable of draft picks and prospects that would interest the Canucks.
In other news, incoming UFA Kiefer Sherwood remains a hot commodity in the league as virtually every playoff contender would love to acquire him; however, nothing seems forthcoming with his desires for it a new contract is a bit of a delay in the process.
Tristan Jarry vs. the Oilers: Sounds unlikely
Edmonton has been linked to Jarry for several weeks, and while their interest in the two-time All-Star is very real, a deal is feeling increasingly unlikely.
Stan Bowman wants to form a tandem of Jarry and Stuart Skinner, which Dubas and the Penguins have no problem with. What causes problems is the Oilers’ need for salary retention on Jarry’s five-year, $26.875 million contract, an accommodation that Pittsburgh has no interest in making.
The Penguins, who currently hold a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, further complicate matters, so unless one side changes its position, these talks could stall.
It all coincides with the fact that Skinner just strung together three great games, which may have bought the Oilers more time to really fix their goaltending issues without rushing into a move they’ll ultimately regret.
New Jersey has a lot of balls in the air
While the Devils have their sights set on reuniting the Hughes brothers in New Jersey, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald has plenty of other options he’s exploring in case that doesn’t work out, especially if the asking price involves captain Nico Hischier. which is a non-starter.
The Devils would prefer to add up in advance then subtract, with interest in several Predators veterans such as Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Ryan O’Reilly, as well as Blues captain Brayden Schenn.
Amid all the Hughes chaos, New Jersey has fallen out of the playoffs thanks to a five-game losing streak, so they may have to act sooner or later to stop their decline.
