Exploring queer 3D flowers for Microsoft – where digital art, identity and technology intersect in a lively design collaboration.
For the pride campaign of Microsoft, O0 Design Studio A series of fuzzy 3D flowers made – playful, tactile backgrounds that celebrate the entire spectrum of queer identity. Every flowering gets inspiration from another LGBTQIA+ flag, which carries its own nerve and charisma. The digital garden came to life due to an asynchronous process that combined AI exploration, visual prototyping and an adapted Houdini tool, allowing the team to shape every flower and refine as if it were a living organism.
Concept
To celebrate the collective power of LGBTQIA+ communities, we have grown a lush, fantastic garden with fuzzy flowers, each inspired by a different pride flag. Every flowering is unique in shape, shadow and charisma, just like all of us. Queers thrive in unity. That is our visual explanation.
Creative workflow
The process was completely asynchronous and evolving cycle of visual direction tests, AI-driven exploration and system structure in Houdini to make rapid procedural refinement possible. Back and forth, until everything clicked.
Custom Houdini tool
Our 3D generalist built an adapted Houdini tool with about ten adjustable parameters, from wind simulation to petals, lighting, shade and more. This gave us the flexibility to generate a wide range of flag-inspired variations quickly and consistently.
