Qatar Open: Emma Raducanu retires in the first round, two days after defeat in the final of the Transylvania Open

Emma Raducanu retired from her first round match against Camila Osorio at the Qatar Open, two days after losing the final of the Transylvania Open.

The British number one called the coach to have her blood pressure checked after being broken at the start of the third set, and after going 2-0 down in the decider against Colombia’s Osorio, she forfeited the match.

Raducanu won the first set 6-2, but conceded the second set 6-4.

On Saturday, the 23-year-old was in her first final since winning the 2021 US Open, but was defeated by Sorana Cirstea in just over an hour at the Transylvania Open.

Raducanu also had her blood pressure measured during that match and afterwards revealed that her condition had been affected as she was “battling a minor respiratory infection”.

Raducanu started strongly against Osario, opening a 3-0 lead before securing the first set 6-2.

Osario showed signs of a comeback late in the first set and her revival continued in the second as she secured her first break of the match to take a 3-2 lead.

Osario forced Raducanu into mistakes and she closed the second set 6-4 when the Briton put a forehand long.

After saving two break points at the start of the deciding set, Raducanu was broken again when she gingerly failed to chase down a drop shot before calling for the trainer.

Raducanu briefly returned to action, but after Osario consolidated her break, the Briton headed to the net to inform the referee that she was withdrawing from the match.

Raducanu has been plagued by injuries and has struggled to find consistency on the WTA Tour since her historic win at the US Open.

In October, Raducanu retired in the first round of the Wuhan Open after her blood pressure and temperature were measured by the doctor.

In January, she split with her newest coach, Francis Roig, after a second-round exit at the Australian Open.

Spaniard Roig, with whom she has worked since the summer of 2025, was the ninth person to coach Raducanu since 2021.
