On his offseason focus
I would say one of the weaker parts of my game was my swing decisions. If I swing at good pitches, things go well, and if I don’t, things go downhill. So offensively that was the biggest thing for me.
And then just sit comfortably behind the dish. I mean, last year the entire first half was like I was in fight or flight mode for the entire game. So I’m just trying to get to where I’m comfortable and work on getting these guys strikes and calling better games and stuff like that.
About resetting after a difficult 2025
I mean me personally, I don’t want to forget it.
I think it kind of lights a fire under you. It’s a tough year. No one wants to lose that much. Nobody wants that to happen.
I think the guys that are here have to look at that and say, “You can’t let that happen again.” That is, those are just my thoughts on it.
I don’t know what Kyle thinks about it, but that’s how I’ve been thinking about it this season.
About becoming a team leader
I mean, we’ve had a lot of conversations [with manager Warren Schaeffer]even from the time he was interim, he called me into the office and talked about it.
I think this is something I would like to be able to do. I’ve never had a role like that before, but I think that’s something I could potentially be good at, and I’ll be able to learn from Kyle. [Freeland] or [Michael] Lorenzen or some of the older guys on the team who can help me fill that role, because at the age I am now, I don’t think I have to be the main character saying or doing anything.
But I definitely think in the future I would like to try to get better at that and put myself in a position to be there.
On what he hopes the Rockies will do better in 2026
Last year we had a super young team, including me. And I think we had a lot of guys, at least from watching games or being in the clubhouse. I think we had a lot of people who were happy to be here.
When I first got called up, you’re like, you’re just happy to be here, and you can’t play like that.
You have to walk on the field and say, “We are the best team. I am the best player on the field.” You have to walk on the field with a different level of confidence.
And I think last year there were some series and some games where you walk onto the field as a team and you look around, and maybe guys aren’t as confident. Boys don’t. They’re just happy to be there. So I think bringing a different mentality into the game would be a big step in the right direction.
About front office changes
I think I just have to talk to them, get calls when they were in the recruiting process, and get new guys and how open-minded they are and how willing they are to tackle this, playing at altitude and at sea level and finding new ways to try to improve the way we approach both sides of that.
