Psychedelics, Sex and Intimacy: Explore the Research – Sexual Health Alliance

As psychedelic research gets strength, sexual health workers will increasingly be curious about or are already working on psychedelics. Most psychedelic research so far emphasizes their benefits for depression, PTSD and fear and clinical programs in Colorado and Oregon already apply these findings. New studies also point out possible consequences for sexual health, intimacy and relationships.

For professionals in the field of sexual health care, staying up to date with these developments can help you better support customers in navigating sexuality, gender and relationships in the context of psychedelic use.

Psychedelics and sexual functioning

Until recently, almost no research investigated immediately how psychedelics influences sexual functioning. That changed in 2024, when the The first research study to quantitatively investigate the effects of psychedelics on sexual functioning Found people who used psychedelics in natural environments, reported improvements in their sex life. They reported that they felt more pleasure, better communication during sex and felt more satisfied with their partner and their own body.

Another recent study assessed how Micro-dosing psychedelica could support psychosexual and the therapy of the couple. It found links to reduced performance -related anxiety, improved desire and more openness in sexual exploration.

  • Participants reported a positive relationship between psychedelics of micro-doses and sexual and physical well-being through a reduction in performance-related anxiety and stress.

Psychedelics, gender, sexuality and intimacy

More recently, researchers have expanded earlier knowledge by conducting a study of nearly 600 participants who investigated HOW Psychedelics can influence broader views on gender, sexuality and intimacy. Sexuality:

  • More participants reported larger shifts in improved attraction, better relationship quality and enriched sexual experiences than negative effects.

  • In general, younger participants, various persons and women reported more shifts in at least one aspect of their sexuality/intimacy

Gender expression:

About 1 in 10 reported shifts in gender identity or expression. . Gender-Diverse participants reported the most shifts. Different themes came forward to gender identity and expression, including: authenticity, openness, self -acceptance, rejection of rigid gender standards.

  • Different participants shared elevated authenticity about gender

  • Others reported more openness to explore their gender identity and expression

  • Many shared new perspectives on gender fluidity and shifts between male and female expressions

Sexual identity and expression:

All groups reported changes in sexual attraction, indicating an increase in sexual fluidity after psychedelic use. Among the participants of men and women, researchers saw a significant increase in the attraction of the same sex.

  • 33% of gender-diverse individuals, 25% of women and 12% of men reported changes in their sexual attraction

Intimate relationships:

Participants reported shifts in their views with regard to romantic and intimate relationships. More individuals reported an openness for polyamory, open relationships or dating of several partners OST-psychedelic experiences. After psychedelic use:

  • A significant increase in polyamorous, dating several people and open relationships were reported

  • Significant decrease in dedication to only one person

  • Be in single

  • Increased authenticity and openness

  • Larger levels of intimacy

  • Improved relationship quality

  • Redeem

Possible challenges:

  • Difficult experiences (“Bad Trips”)

  • Confusion or need with regard to identity shifts

  • Limited understanding of long -term effects

Conclusion

For professionals in the field of sexual health care, the implications are clear: psychedelics can significantly determine how customers understand and experience sexuality, intimacy and identity. Being willing to discuss this subject is necessary. Part of this includes understanding how they work, rising research and potential risks and benefits.

While in the earlier stages of psychedelic research it is also important to notice the great gap in understanding psychedelics that persist, especially those intersing identities. Limited psychedelic studies are representative of various sexual, gender and racial identities. More research is needed to enable sexual health workers to support individuals in all stages of their journey.
