I am #1 so why try harder (Sony)

A reader is convinced that the runaway profits of the PS5 Sony have convinced that doing as little as possible is the most reliable route to success.

There is a popular meme that has now lasted a number of years, which is usually used to China and simply states: ‘does nothing. Win. ‘I don’t want to come to the atmosphere of global politics, but it is quite clear what it means, because the influence of China continues to grow, simply as a result of having the US make mistakes, while it wise everything.

I think you can probably see where I am going to do this, but China replaced by Sony and the US by Microsoft and I think you have a fairly good summary of the current generation of video games.

I have been thinking about the comparison for a while, but it seemed even clearer this week, when Xbox bundled its way through a different vague and non -convincing hardware, while Sony did absolutely nothing … except that the PlayStation was 5 more profitable than all other PlayStation consoles combined.

If we exclude the PlayStation 3 (which is the only one who makes no profit), I think I can say with some certainty that nobody ever will count the PlayStation 5 as their favorite Sony console. The power increase is almost completely unproven and the promises about it were quite sketchy anyway.

It has also had much less first party games than the PlayStation 4, even though it is the peak of the internal development of Sony – the kind of things that you might have expected to build on their next console. Add the disaster that has been their attitude to live service games and you would imagine that they will be poorly punished for their inactivity, not to mention their unwillingness to discuss this in public.

Instead, doing nothing was incredibly good for them. Not discussing things in public, which is always a risk, is great, so why would you do something else? The lesson that the PlayStation 5 seems to have learned is that the less you make more profit that you make.

This is because Sony now earns so much money with PS Plus and Microtransactie that it literally does not have to participate. Because Xbox is no longer a serious rival in terms of hardware, most people play AAA games on a PlayStation 5 and so all those skins and cosmetics and other waste from Super Mainstream games such as Call of Duty and EA Sports FC are purchased on PlayStation 5S, where Sony gets a part of everything.

The majority of Sony’s profit does not come of everything that has to do with the things that the core or hardcore gamers like, these are all casuals that online multiplayer games want to play, while they waste hundreds of microt transactions and complain that all other games are too expensive.

Sony does not have to get in touch with fewer casual fans because they are already making money. Ignoring fans even seems to earn more (much more) money than even offering the strange olive branch.

Do you want to know why Sony is so obsessed with live service games? In particular online shooters. It is because they need PS Plus to play them and they are easy to fill with cosmetics for which you pay with microtransactions. They are the opposite of single-player games, which is why we no longer get that and yet the failure of Concord hardly seemed to phase.

Sony did not completely stop making good games. Ghost of Yōtei is out this year and they can clearly pay for the strange prestige game with one player to show off and win prizes. Things like that helps the PlayStation 5 to make more attractive, but without competition in terms of high -end consoles there is hardly any choice -it is PlayStation 5 or Switch 2 now and I think it is pretty clear what the average cod and FIFA player goes for.

It is all pretty gloomy and depressing real. Good games will be made – this year has been great – but not by Sony, or at least no more than once a year or so. The PlayStation 5 is ruined by its success and, just as everyone predicted, has made a single format future, without serious competition, Sony complacent and lazy. Unfortunately the future is now and it is not very good.
