The Maximus Mischief colt broke sharply from post 6 under Mychel Sanchez and immediately took control of the sloppy, closed track, driving through fractions of :22.58 and :45.32 while staying a length clear. Turning for home he drifted off the rail but stayed well within himself, responding easily when called upon and pulling away to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

The running time was 1:23.29 for seven furlongs.

Trained by Robert E. Reid Jr., the Cash Is King LLC and LC Racing LLC homebred Mailata continued his rapid progression after a first score on the same surface on October 29. After finishing third and fourth in his first two outings, the Pennsylvania-bred delivered a breakthrough performance last time out when stretching to a mile, and he backed it up here with an even sharper performance at seven furlongs.

His victory in the Nursery improved his record to 4-2-0-1 with earnings of $114,500. He paid $9.40 as the second choice in a field of seven.

Behind the winner, 6-5 favorite Mister Me paced from within and proved clearly second best, while Red Zone Runner recovered from a slow start to come down the rail in third, over two lengths clear of second, but a dozen ahead of fourth.

In the other bets of the day:

  • The Tyler Servis-trained Divine Intentions scored easily in the Shamrock Rose for State-bred two-year-old fillies, winning by three lengths throughout under Frankie Pennington. Divine Intentions is 2-for-3 in her career.
  • Trainer Michael Moore’s decision to drop Alani from last weekend’s Willa On the Move at Laurel Park proved prescient as the four-year-old Competitive Edge filly survived a tough challenge from Mega Mil to go one step further and take a two-length victory in the Cornucopia Stakes for older fillies and mares. Ridden by Andy Hernandez, Alani won her seventh career race, from 19 starts, and recorded her second stakes win, pushing her winnings above $400,000.
  • Jockey Mychel Sanchez scored his second win of the day as Call Me Fast narrowly edged Ninetyprcentmaddie to win the Turkey Trot. It was the second win in a row for trainee Jamie Ness, a six-year-old Dialed In gelding who twice finished second in Grade 3 company.
  • Trainer Butch Reid and jockey Mychel Sanchez were at it again in the nightcap, teaming up to win the Let’s Give Thanks Stakes with Maximus Meridius, a head better than Howgreatisnate. Maximus Meridius, a four-year-old Maximus Mischief gelding, won the third stakes of his career.
