Proven UFC flyweight removed from rankings and on hiatus for remainder of 2025 | BJPenn.com

A stalwart within the UFC’s flyweight division was missing from the latest rankings update, and one of the world’s most prominent combat sports journalists dug into the details as to why that is.

On The Ariel Helwani Showthe titular figure turned to Kai Kara-France who was removed from the UFC flyweight rankings and at this point began a run through the top ten hierarchy among 125-pounders. Kara-France, who was in the top ten, is now completely gone, and now that Ariel Helwani has clarified that the former UFC flyweight title challenger has not been released from the promotion, Helwani said:

“Well, I contacted his team and they told me that it is indeed true. He’s not ranked and they explain why. They told me that he had informed the UFC that he was taking a year off. That there were other things he wanted to do. He’s not necessarily retiring, but he’s taking a break. He’s taking at least a year off. He wants to do some cultural stuff.”

“Some things that have nothing to do with fighting. He is very spiritual, we have obviously seen him do things for his culture, for his heritage, for his people, for his country. He is taking this break and therefore has removed himself from the test pool. As a result, he is unranked. He is not eligible to be ranked. That is why he did not appear on the rankings this week.”

Kai Kara-France’s efforts in the UFC so far

Kai Kara-France’s UFC stint has certainly had some notable highlights. While he became quasi-affiliated with the company during his time on the twenty-fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Kara-France made his official UFC debut in December 2018.

Since then, ‘Don’t Blink’ has scored statement victories in the octagon against the likes of Cody Garbrandt, Askar Askarov and Steve Erceg.

In Kara-France’s last Ultimate Fighting Championship outing prior to the announcement of this hiatus, he failed to capture the 125-pound crown when he fought Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 317 in June.
