Edward Dicke won Laurel Park’s Autumn Handicapping Challenge
By Vinnie Perrone
Laurel, Md. – Proton Showed restraint to start the laurel feturity of $ 125,000 on Saturday and eager to finish it.
While his 2-year-old rivals were in the Startpoort, Proton ran on top of the grass as if he wanted to burn the lead drama. Then he loaded without a hassle, followed the leaders to the Laurel Park-Stretch and rose ahead for a victory of a length of Jutland. Popular Longshot Parkes came in third place on his turf course for home.
Proton improved to 2-from-2 with the score of $ 75,000 and substantiated the promise of horse races for his stable. Debbie Easter collected a property group with other Virginians, Clyde “Linny” Miles and Son Randy, including, collaborated with Stone Farm from Kentucky and bought the yearling proton for $ 20,000 in 2024.
The son of the Australian father Asterern and the elusive quality market debuted five weeks ago with a Hard-Closing Sprint victory at Colonial Downs and managed today, even enjoyed the extra twist and distance of Futurity.
Ian Wilson, assistant to trainer Graham Motion, said that the stable has bypassed a new colonial start for the future to give Proton a longer peace between races. On a sturdy course in the lightest drizzle, the bay substantiated the decision in a time of 1: 44.43.
His privilege capital did not surprise his connections. The exuberance of Proton led to his early gelding, which reduced but did not bleed his frankk. “We have had problems with him in the past,” said Wilson. “Nothing bad, but he was a bit of a difficult horse at the gate in the morning.”
Wilson left the tactic at Jockey Jorge Ruiz, who was satisfied to keep Proton behind and out of the front runners blue suede shoes and forty -two. The 7-10 favorite seriously progressed in the long turn, maintained the rally three wide and kept the victory while Jutland was closed late.
Even when Proton pushed his income up to $ 127,500 in a career that hardly started, his connections did not seem willing to dream too big. “I think we have many options for him,” Wilson said. “We can go anywhere with this horse.”
From the founding of 1921 as a dirt race, the Laurel Futurity has endowed the national racing scene. Morvich, the first winner of the future, took the Kentucky Derby the next spring. The future also launched Triple Crown Heroes Count Fleet, Citation, Secretariat and confirmed and thoroughbred Titans Spectacular Bid, Challedon, Captain Bodgit, Barbaro, Riva Ridge and Jet Pilot.
