Seider’s lesson from PyeongChang 2018: “They loved and embraced the Olympic spirit”
When asked about his favorite Olympic memory from when he was younger, Seider named two legends of the Olympic Games: “I was a big man of the Summer Olympics, I just saw Michael Phelps And Usain Bolt Dominating my childhood was pretty crazy.”
But it wasn’t the immediate answer, which came a lot closer to home: Germany’s second place at PyeongChang 2018 in the men’s ice hockey tournament. Germany won Olympic silver in 2018 with NHL players absent, then won World Cup silver in 2023 with a pair of players not involved in that season’s NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
“The first thing that came to mind was 2018 and the silver medal for the Germans. I was still at school and it was clearly a breathtaking moment for our entire country,” Seider said.
He spoke to teammates who played on that team and took home a decisive message from them.
“Overall, how much they loved the Olympic spirit and how much they embraced that,” he said of what they shared with him about 2018. “I think that’s definitely something I want to take with me and bring to the team at the next Olympic Games – that’s something I’m really looking forward to.”
The run to world silver in 2023, which saw Seider score five points (one goal, four assists) and play all 10 of Germany’s matches in the tournament, was also a taste of things to come. Seider was named after the media-voted All-Star team for the tournament.
“It was clearly special; we had a great team. I really enjoyed it. With the national team it is always a great privilege and an honor to wear the jersey that represents our country. It was probably the biggest stage we have done so far.”
Now there is an even bigger vision of Milano Cortina 2026.
“It’s the biggest stage on which you can win an international medal at the Olympic Games, and that’s definitely something you dream of as a kid, to eventually be a part of.
“It will be the greatest honor of my career so far.”
