Primo Maschio closes DSBF sweep with tough win

DOVER, Del. — After decisive victories in both preliminary running races, Primo Maschio (Badlands Hanover) dug deep to beat Lew Not Lou for a 1:52.3 victory in the $110,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund (DSBF) series championship for 3-year-old male pacers on Thursday (Dec. 18) at Bally’s Dover.

Primo Maschio and driver Trae Porter landed second into the first turn behind Shore Not Beach (driven by Pat Berry), who worked to clear early leader Lew Not Lou (Jason Thompson) from the lead at the end of a:27 first quarter. After leaving the first corner exposed, Primo Maschio powered through to take control of the conditions with a circuit to go, and the Badlands Hanover-Primadonna gelding rolled to the halfway point in :55.

On the backstretch and through the far turn, Primo Maschio faced continued pressure from Lew Not Lou, who came back to the front from third to force a :28.2 third quarter and pose an even greater threat from the home turn.

“I was a little worried,” Lew Not Lou’s Porter said as he took aim at Primo Maschio from the corner. “He reached my saddle pad, but as soon as we reached the top of the stretch, my foal dug in deeper. He’s such a nice horse.”

Primo Maschio held Lew Not Lou at bay, while Shore Not Beach stayed out of the pocket and finished third, just a distance behind the top pair.
