Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (January 11, 2025) flagged off the Metro Rail from Mahatma Mandir Metro Station in Gandhinagar to mark the inauguration of the remaining Phase II portion of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro project.

Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi were present on the occasion.

After shutting down the metro service, the Prime Minister interacted with the citizens who gathered at the station.

The station witnessed a festive and devotional atmosphere as people waved the national flag and raised slogans of “Jaamani Mgti, wife Parlia has been mentioned..”

As part of the event, Mr Patel and Mr Sanghavi traveled by metro on the Phase II route in Gandhinagar. During the trip, the Chief Minister interacted with commuters and students and sought feedback on the metro services, reiterating the state government’s commitment to providing modern, efficient and fast public transport.

Providing details about the project, Metro Rail Director (Project and Planning) Anand Singh Bisht said the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Rail was first inaugurated in Ahmedabad in October 2022. In September 2024, the Prime Minister had inaugurated Metro services from Motera to Sector-1 along with extensions to Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and GIFT City.

With Sunday’s inauguration, the remaining Phase II section, comprising seven metro stations covering a distance of 7.8 km, had become operational. Mr Bisht said the Metro recorded an average of about 35,000 passengers per day during Phase I. With Phases I and II fully integrated, the daily passenger count had increased to around 1.60 lakh passengers shuttling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, reflecting an increase of almost 60%.
