Our weekend Premier League team celebrates the best performers from the past two days.
This week’s line-up highlights some of the division’s lesser lights, with none from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City!
Premier League team of the weekend:
GK: Robin Roefs – Sunderland
The frontrunner for Goalkeeper of the Season is not David Raya or Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Robin Roefs. The Sunderland stopper is in the line-up for the second week in a row after making eight saves in a shock win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
No goalkeeper has made more saves (37) this season than the Dutchman, who is quickly becoming the star of the show on Wearside.
RB: Matty Cash – Aston Villa
Matty Cash has had his share of detractors over the years, but the full-back hardly put a step wrong as Aston Villa defeated Manchester City at home. He made good use of his left pin in the 19th minute when he fired in from just outside the penalty area after a smart corner.
CB: Joe Rodon – Leeds United
A huge defensive performance from the Leeds defense helped them secure a huge win over West Ham and take them up to 15th in the table. Joe Rodon scored his second goal of the season, making nine turnovers and four recoveries to see them over the line.
A late goal from Mateus Fernandes ended their spell, but it did nothing to detract from a brilliant display across the board.
CB: Micky van de Ven – Spurs
Tottenham are the new Set Piece FC as Micky van de Ven headed twice past Everton’s Jordan Pickford on Sunday to help them to a 3-0 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Dutchman is the first Tottenham defender in twelve years to score twice in a league match.
LB: Quilindschy Hartmann – Burnley
There is a real Dutch connection on the left side of defense this week as Quilindschy Hartmann comes in after a string of assists.
The 23-year-old set aside compatriot Zian Flemming twice to put Burnley two goals ahead at Wolves. The Wanderers leveled things later, but a last-second goal from Lyle Foster secured a crucial victory in the relegation battle.
CM: Casemire – Also Utd
I’m just as surprised as you are. Casemiro’s days at Old Trafford appeared to be numbered, with a money-consuming move to Saudi Arabia certainly on the cards. But the Brazilian is still there and making a change.
This was one of the midfielder’s better days in a United shirt, recording a goal and an assist while doing the dirty work against Brighton. He completed five recoveries, three tackles, two interceptions, a block and a clearance. He can also rejoice in the fact that the opponent only scored after he was eliminated.
CM: Bruno Guimarães – Newcastle United
Casemiro is joined in midfield by his compatriot Bruno Guimarães. The 27-year-old led the attack in the second half against Fulham and eventually got the winner right at the end.
It was Bruno’s fourth shot of the match, while he also created four chances (the most of any player in the match), so it was fitting that he made the decisive play.
CM: Noah Sadiki – Sunderland
Granit Xhaka gets all the praise from the media and online, but Noah Sadiki was excellent on Saturday. He defended well in the first half, while also carrying the ball forward and starting attacks.
RF: Bryan Mbeumo – Man Utd
It felt like Bryan Mbeumo finally arrived at United last weekend. The forward put in the kind of attacking performance the club paid good money for against Brighton, netting a goal and an assist. It looks like he will be a huge threat this season.
CF: Zian Flemming – Burnley
We never thought we’d see the day when two Burnley players would find their way into the Team of the Weekend, but here we are. The striker’s brace played a huge role in their victory over Wolves, while he also won an incredible number of matches; 14, the most of any player in the game.
LF: Kevin Schade – Brentford
There had to be at least one Brentford player here after their famous win over Liverpool at home. Dango Ouattara misses thanks to Mbeumo, but Kevin Schade was arguably even better on the opposite flank.
The German doubled the Bees’ lead towards the end of the first half, creating five chances. That was more than anyone else on the field, which is crazy considering the talent level of the opponent.
