Our Premier League team of the weekend celebrates the best performances of the last two days, with a heavy dose of Nottingham Forest, Hugo Ekitike, Morgan Rogers and Harry Wilson.
GK: Robin Roefs – Sunderland
Another top performance from the Sunderland goalkeeper, who kept a clean sheet and helped his side beat Newcastle United for the first time in ten years. Roefs only had to make two saves, but he also made an astonishing 16 recoveries, blocking opposition attacks at key moments in the Tyne-Wear Derby.
RB: Malo Gusto – Chelsea
An excellent all-round performance from Malo Gusto was the key to Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday. The full-back, who played in midfield at times, came away with a goal, assist and clean sheet, while also creating two chances and making four recoveries and four turnovers.
CB: Pascal Struijk – Leeds United
Not a clean sheet for Leeds, but another valuable point as they kept Brentford at bay and extended their unbeaten run to three games. Pascal Struijk played an absolute monster game at the back and lost fourteen balls, eight of which with his head. He also made eight recoveries, three tackles, one block and an interception.
CB: Ibrahima Konate – Liverpool
Yes, you read that correctly. Ibrahima Konate is in the team for the weekend. Liverpool’s central defender has had a miserable season full of mistakes so far, but he was much more confident on Saturday against Brighton. He made the most tackles (5), won the most duels (10) on the pitch and made two big blocks to deny the Seagulls and help the Reds to a 2-0 win at Anfield.
LB: Neco Williams – Nottingham Forest
A typically energetic and committed display from Neco Williams, who almost got away with an assist during Forest’s 3-0 win over Spurs at the City Ground. The Welshman created two chances, made eight defensive contributions and won four fouls.
CM: Ibrahim Sangare – Nottingham Forest
Ibrahim Sangare showed Spurs what they are missing in midfield on Sunday after a man of the match performance. He was involved in all three goals and set up Callum Hudson-Odoi twice before the winger put him in third for Forest. The Ivorian will be greatly missed when he heads to AFCON next week.
CM: Lesley Ugochukwu – Burnley
If one Burnley player comes away with credit on the bench this season, it is Lesley Ugochukwu. The former Chelsea midfielder was brilliant against Fulham and inspired The Clarets almost to a draw at the Cottage on Saturday evening.
The 21-year-old equalized with a simple but beautiful finish in the first half and almost leveled matters when he impressively chested a quick ball before volleying it towards goal. It took a fantastic save from Bernd Leno to deny him.
CAM: Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa
Morgan Rogers turns doubters into believers with his recent shapeshifting. He inspired Aston Villa to a comeback win at West Ham United, scoring twice to turn things around at the London Stadium.
The striker equalized with a controlled ball and finished before winning the match late with a golazo. Astonishing.

RW: Harry Wilson – Fulham
Harry Wilson has been unstoppable lately, whether for club or country. The winger added a further three goals to his strong campaign as Fulham defeated Burnley at home.
Using a clever corner routine, he set up Emile Smith-Rowe for the opener and then impressively brought the ball downfield before passing the ball to Calvin Bassey for their second goal. He took the three points with a cool, calm finish in the second half.
LW: Callum Hudson-Odoi – Nottingham Forest
In his first start in a month and a half, Hudson-Odoi returned with a bang. He opened the scoring with a tap-in before unleashing a brilliant strike to double Forest’s lead, although he admitted afterwards it was as much a cross as a shot. The winger crossed in from the left before setting up Sangare to put the icing on the cake for Sean Dyche’s side.
CF: Hugo Ekitike – Liverpool
With Mo Salah’s time possibly coming to an end in the near future, a new star is emerging for Liverpool in the form of Hugo Ekitike.
The striker was a constant threat for Brighton from the start. It took him just 51 seconds to score with a beautiful goal and he probably should have had more before half-time. He did get his second after the break, but headed in powerfully from a Salah corner.
The brace makes Ekitike the youngest Liverpool player to score twice in consecutive Premier League games since Michael Owen 24 years ago.
