Premier League Team of the Week: Haaland, Rice, Gomez

Our Premier League Team of the Week celebrates the best performers from the weekend’s action.
Goalkeeper: Guglielmo Vicario – Tottenham Hotspur

The only player in Tottenham colors to emerge with credit after a miserable 1-0 defeat at home to Chelsea. Vicario did his utmost to ensure the Blues didn’t get away with it, with brilliant stops from Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto. He made seven saves from inside the penalty area in a shot stop that avoided embarrassment.

Right back: Conor Bradley – Liverpool

Much improved. Arne Slot was faced with a problem position at right back following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Dominik Szoboszlai being used as an auxiliary option.

However, Bradley rediscovered his best in the win over Aston Villa, bringing brilliant energy to the Reds and remaining solid defensively. The challenge now is to put together a series of games.

Central defender: Jan Paul van Hecke – Brighton

Defending with front foot, as was seen, he won the ball back high up the pitch in tigerish fashion to create a chance for Danny Welbeck.

As always, his distribution was on point. He completed eight long passes, including a rake to Yankuba Minteh in the build-up to Brighton’s second.

Center back: Gabriel – Arsenal

The Premier League’s Player of the Season so far? Arsenal’s big Brazilian is a nightmare to deal with in the penalty area and assisted the opener at Burnley after causing chaos again.

Defensively he was tremendous, making nine clearances and winning 100% of his defensive duels (6/6). He is perhaps the best central defender in the world right now.

Left back: Nico O’Reilly – Manchester City

Back to basics and full of his usual efforts for the future. O’Reilly regularly dropped forward from his left-back role and was rewarded with an opening to set up Manchester City’s third match against Bournemouth.

City are unbeaten in the six Premier League games he has started this season. In the four he has not, Pep Guardiola’s side have lost three times.

Midfield: Ryan Gravenberch – Liverpool

Ryan Gravenberch showed how important he is to Liverpool on his return from an ankle injury.

After three games away, Gravenberch was back and put in a dominant performance in midfield against Aston Villa.

His duel winning and press resistance stand out, although he is now also adding goals to his game. A deflected goal made it third in the Premier League this season.

Midfield: Moises Caicedo – Chelsea

Sets a good example. Moises Caicedo must be a nightmare to play against with his tenacity and it showed as he took on the challenge of creating Chelsea’s winner at Spurs.

The Ecuadorian robbed possession to set up Joao Pedro as the Blues beat their London rivals 1-0. Caicedo is seemingly everywhere right now.

Midfield: Declan Rice – Arsenal

Ran the show. His deliveries caused carnage during Arsenal’s win over Burnley, while Rice never shied away from his defensive duties with nine games won as the Gunners kept a seventh consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.

He was a driving force in the league’s best team and sealed the victory with a fantastic header from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

Forward: Lucas Paqueta – West Ham

Despite rumors of unrest, Lucas Paqueta continues to fight for West Ham’s cause. The Brazilian played a key role in a huge 3-1 win for the Hammers against Newcastle, scoring the equalizer with a fierce strike from distance.

He has had more touches (77) and attempted more crosses (6) than any other West Ham player, while only four players have scored more goals from outside the penalty area for the Hammers in the Premier League era (5).

Forward: Diego Gomez – Brighton

After hitting the headlines earlier this season with four goals in the Carabao Cup, Gomez performed in the Premier League against Leeds.

The Paraguayan twice entered the penalty area too late to shoot the ball home and almost clinched his second treble of the season late on. The 22-year-old is growing in confidence and needs more minutes.

Forward: Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Just so clinical. Bournemouth must take some responsibility for the naivete of a high defensive line as Haaland ruthlessly exposed the space at the back. Leave grass for him to walk on at your own risk.

It is now thirteen league goals this season, only the third time a Premier League player has reached that total in ten games. Haaland is responsible for two of them. A robot party was fitting for a player who often doesn’t look human.
