Crystal Palace are interested in signing Joe Willock from Newcastle United, according to a new media exclusive.
The Telegraph report According to their information, United’s Premier League rivals are considering making a bid in January to entice Newcastle to sell.
Joe Willock has a contract with Newcastle United that currently runs until June 30, 2027 and has struggled to make first-team starts.
Only one each in the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season, until last night against Marseille.
Joe Willock was one of United’s best players on the night, reminding us at times what an asset he can be when he’s on form.
However, he has only shown the fleeting form that made him a key player and automatic first choice in the 2022/23 season, as Newcastle United finished fourth and reached Wembley.
Injuries and fitness issues have plagued him, but struggling to play a run of games over the past two or more years has made it a bit of a vicious cycle. As in the past, Joe Willock appears to need a run of games before he finds his rhythm and form.
The arrival of Jacob Ramsey has seemingly made Joe Willock Newcastle’s sixth-choice midfielder and The Telegraph say this has now encouraged Crystal Palace to think they could potentially sign him in January.
At the time (summer 2021) it was reported that Newcastle United had paid £25 million for the then Arsenal midfielder, but this report claims it was £21 million. Either way, if Newcastle receive a bid in that ballpark, United could well be tempted to sell.
Earlier this month, it was reported in the media that Newcastle United would be interested in signing exciting midfielder Kees Smit in January. This move was intended to give them an edge over many other top clubs who were trying to sign the talented 19-year-old AZ Alkmaar.
The Telegraph suggests that if Newcastle United can land Kees Smit, it could pave the way for Crystal Palace to sign Joe Willock. Otherwise, it is highly unlikely that Eddie Howe sees himself with one less midfield option at the end of January, especially in such a busy season (which will hopefully still be very busy in a number of competitions by then!).
