STUDIOS FROM THE 20TH CENTURY
Last weekend’s number 1 hit Predator: Badlandstakes a huge dive at the box office in its second weekend with a 68% drop in domestic ticket sales.
The ninth film in the Predator film franchise – of which there are two Alien vs. Predator movies — Predator: Badlands earned $40 million from 3,725 North American theaters during its opening weekend of November 7–9.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (Prey and the animated one Predator: killer of killers), Predator: Badlands follows the fate of Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) – an exiled member of a Predator clan on the planet Yautja Prime – who becomes allies with the badly damaged synthetic Thia (Elle Fanning) on the remote planet Genna.
While hunting Genna for a gigantic creature of the Kalisk species, Dek and Thia come into conflict with Thia’s synthetic ‘sister’, Tessa (also Fanning), of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, who has his own plans for the beast.
While Predator: Badlands set a record for the biggest box office opening for one Predator film in the franchise’s history – before inflation – with a $40 million opening at the domestic box office, the film’s ticket sales took a huge dive in the film’s second weekend.
According to weekend estimates reported on Sunday by The numbers, Predator: Badlands earned just $13 million from 3,725 North American theaters in its second weekend of November 14-16, marking a 68% drop from opening weekend ticket sales.
As such, the 20th Century Studios release fell to No. 3 at the domestic box office. Predator: Badlands has earned $66.3 million domestically and $70 million in international ticket sales to date, for a worldwide box office of $136.3 million.
The numbers reported that Predator: Badlands had a production budget of $105 million, excluding prints and advertising costs.
