A former Prarahran dairy where the iconic Australian film Dogs in Space starring rock star Michael Hutchence was filmed has been sold for a seven-figure sum.
Writer and director Richard Lowenstein used the building at 9 Charles St to shoot scenes for his 1986 release Dogs in Space.
The film explores the lives of a group of friends living in a shared house in Melbourne with Hutchence, then the singer of chart-topping INXS, playing the frontman of a punk group.

It is believed the Prahran location was also used to film part of the music video for INXS’ single Listen Like Thieves, along with St Kilda’s Palais Theater and Northcote’s Westgarth Cinema.
ARIA Hall of Famers INXS have sold more than 75 million records worldwide with their singles, including What You Need, Need You Tonight, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and New Sensation, released in the 1980s and 1990s, before Hutchence’s death in 1997.
Jack Richardson of Abercrombys declined to comment on the sale price of the property, but industry sources indicated it fetched more than $3 million after listing for $2.8 million to $3 million.
Despite its dilapidated state, the dairy attracted a lot of interest from buyers.

The top floor terrace has great views but needs some TLC.
The building was used as a photography studio in the 1970s and 1980s and consists of two levels plus an open-air upper terrace, a red brick facade and exposed trusses.
Three bidders registered for a private auction at the warehouse-style building on Saturday.
A buyer who plans to restore and renovate the building into their home has claimed the keys.
The building, which previously served as a dairy, ice cream factory and photography studio, does not have a heritage overlay.

The former dairy is close to Chapel St, High St and Greville St in Prahran.
Most buyers were interested in converting the address into a home because of its character, size and location close to Chapel, High and Greville streets, Richardson said.
“There were very few people who wanted to turn it around and develop it on a commercial basis,” he added.
And many potential buyers were also charmed by the history of the old dairy.
“We had the gentleman who ran the dairy decades ago, probably a century ago, his granddaughter came with all these historic photos of the property,” Richardson said.
