India has emerged as the world’s third fastest growing country in terms of power generation capacity in the past five years, only after China and the United States, according to a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The report emphasized an increase in the demand for electricity in India, fed by rapid urban expansion, increased use of air conditioners and household appliances and larger energy needs of industries. To meet this rising demand, the power generation is extensively over all energy sources in the country, including renewable. An important contribution to this expansion was the ambitious clean energy agenda of India. The IEA noticed a particularly strong increase in investments in renewable energy, in particular photovoltaic projects for solar energy (PV). In the Solar PV alone, more than half of the total investments of India in India have been in the past five years. In 2024, a striking 83% of the total investment of the country of the country was aimed at initiatives for clean energy.India has also emerged as the world’s largest recipient of the financing of Development Finance Institution (DFI) for clean energy projects last year and received around $ 2.4 billion in project -specific support. Foreign Investments (BDI) in the energy sector have also seen a considerable boost, up to $ 5 billion reached double the pre-Pandemic levels in 2023-Bijna.This revival has been made possible by government policy that makes 100% BDI in electricity generation possible (excluding nuclear) and transmission infrastructure. The report, however, marked a decrease in investments in the foreign portfolio in the energy sector in the last two years, stating broader macro -economic and sectoral headwind. Despite this dip, the long -term front views remain optimistic. The findings of the IEA emphasized the growing role of India in the global energy transition and the increasing focus on the investment of clean energy.
