Porsche stopped the original Macan in Europe last year, not because it wanted, but because it had to be. The gasoline crosover has not met the general safety regulations (GSR2) that came into force in July 2024, so that Zuffenhausen forced the plug on his cash on the old continent. It is still available in other parts of the world that do not adhere to the GSR2 legislation. However, the days of the first generation Macan are numbered because the production will end next year. What is coming after? A new crossover driven by gas.
Those “significant extra expenses” that are partially assigned to investments in new gasoline and hybrid efforts will occur in a new crossover with burning. In March, Porsche said it was considering a new ice product by “evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with burning and hybrid powertrains.” That is now decided and the model will be for sale in three years.
Speaking during the H1 2025 win, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that a new Crossover driven by gas will arrive by 2028. The man who called the shots in Zuffenhausen described it as a “very, very typical Porsche for this segment and also differentiated from the BEV Macan.” To put it on the market in such a short time, the company “accelerates the process there with very short development times.”
Blume did not respond to how the vehicle will be ready in 2028, even though the net received the green light. Our well -trained gamble is that Porsche will rely on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) of the Volkswagen Group to speed up development. If so, the crossover will probably share a lot with the latest Audi Q5. That would not be without precedent, because the outgoing Macan drives on the MLB platform that has based the previous generation Q5. Porsche even said that the new model “would benefit from synergies.”
The newest Q5 is the first SUV of the VW group on the PPC architecture and is supplied with four-cylinder petrols and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid setups and a Vlezier V-6 for the hot SQ5. The latter has a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid engine with 362 hp on tap. Whether the new crossover from Porsche reflects the Q5/SQ5 -Line -UPP is still to be seen, but it is unlikely that the 2.0 TDI will be offered. The company promised to leave diesel engines in 2018 after the annoying Dieselkaat scandal.
Because it is still early for testing prototypes, we only have the promise of a new design with “Porsche’s characteristic profile”. Blume says that the newcomer will compete in the same segment as the Macan, so expect a similar footprint.
Regarding the name of the vehicle, it will certainly not be Macan. As soon as the first generation model retired in 2026, Porsche will only reserve that name for the purely electric second generation. There will be about a two -year gap between the end of the production of the original Macan and his direct successor.
Initially, the company did not intend to develop another crossover of burning, to bet everything on the electrical Macan. However, it has come to terms with the reality that EVs have not received a grip as Porsche had hoped, which forced the management to reconsider.
