Saratoga Springs, NY – RA Hill Stable and Trainer George WeaverS Pop Idol Led from gate-to-wire to win on Thursday of the stated $ 150,000 galway, a 5 1/2-Furlong Mellon Turf Sprint for second-year Fillies, on Saratoga Race Course.
The Maclean’s Music Bay was one of the four participants for Weaver when she made her first start since she won the six-follow Shady Well in November about the Woodbine Tapeta while in the care of Katerina Vassilieva. She returned victoringly from the dismissal of more than eight months with a successful second-year debut at odds of 17-1.
“It seemed to me that she was walking the best,” Weaver said. “She broke running and I told them all that they had to go outside and try to stay away from each other and ride a natural race. She broke on the lead and continued, saved.
“Everyone asked me about these Merbuids, and I said:” Each of them has a chance to win, I really believe that. “If you like one on 7-2 or 4-1, well, here is one in 16 or 17-1,” Weaver added.
Driven by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, Pop Idol Alert came from the inside and took early command, while Magnolia Prime exerted pressure from the outer ninth post through an opening quarter-mile in 21.56 seconds on the sturdy turf.
Pop Idol led in turn, while Magnolia Prime continued with a large number of pursuers behind preparing for their runs, including delicious flame and Weaver Stablemate Regalton, as well as the Weaver-Train Laurice who launched a wide bid and follows 2-1 favorite love Cerverke on the Extreme outside.
“She was pretty strong in the first part, so I tried to judge her as well as possible and to save before the end and she gave it all,” said Velazquez. “I waited all the time. I waited for we turned home to let her run and she responded.”
During the stretch call, by half a mile in 44.61, Pop Idol still gave a 1/2 length lead over the Rallying Favorite Love Cerverke, but it seemed that she had cut her work for her because almost the entire field was out and with a chance.
Pop Idol, encouraged by Velazquez, responded along the rail and kept the daylight back on Love Cervere and the oncoming abientot who came from the last danger under Dylan Davis. Abientot shot the thread, but there was no catching doll idol, which won with one length in the last time of 1: 02.13.
Love Cerere was half a length back of Abientot in third place, so that a nose was better finished than the New York-Foked Silsbee trained by Wever. Laurice, Magnolia Prime, Make Haste, Regalton and delicious flame completed the order of finish.
Twirling Beauty, proud Starlet, Roja, Luna Louska, as well as headworkers participants Hollygrove, flat time and stone smuggler were scratched.
Weaver said he was impressed by Pop Idol’s showing off the bank.
“I thought she was one or two work,” said Weaver. “You have to take your chances with the 3-year-olds, especially the mares and as much black type as possible, and hope that when they have to run around 3 and ups, they can continue their shape. I was happy to win and I felt bad that none of the others hit the board, but it is what it is, and they all deserved a shot.”
Dylan Davis said that the Double Hall of Famer Mark Casse-Train Abiltot could use more distance. He sent her in third place on the race and the distance for the last time in the 3 Coronation Cup degree on July 11 here, and navigated her elusive deployment victory in the Six-Furlong degree 3 Matron in October in Belmont on the Big A.
“I enjoy driving on her. She’s good. She’s not that big, but she’s absolutely fast. Five and a half is just short for her, period, but she always comes with a great run, great heart and a strong finish,” Davis said. “I was a bit wide the last time, I thought, a little chased, so I tried to go inside and wait a little longer, and everyone got stuck, so I finally had to go outside. I saved the whole turn, so it went pretty well.
Pop Idol, bred in Ontario by Christine Hayden, is from the grade 3-winning lemon drop kid mare unrestrained and was a purchase of $ 150,000 from the 2024 phasig-tip horses of Racing Age Sale. She won $ 82,500 in victory while improved her record to 7-4-0-1 and $ 37.60 for a win of $ 2.
Live racing will resume on Friday with a 10-race card with the grade 2 ballston Spa in race 8. The first message is 13:10 hours Eastern.
