Speaking at the meeting, Charles Martin said that Puducherry had been neglected for years and people were suffering due to the failure of governance.
He said his vision was to transform Puducherry into ‘the number one city in the world’, where people would not struggle for food or shelter and where youth would have ample employment opportunities.
Pointing out gaps in healthcare, he said Puducherry had hospitals but no doctors, while the elderly were not receiving proper medical care. He also alleged that those who raised their voices against sexual abuse of women were attacked.
Charles Martin raised concerns about the representation of the sport, saying that no player from Puducherry had made it into the cricket team and claiming that people from outside were being given priority. He further alleged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India was functioning as a private company.
He also flagged the poor condition of the Housing Board buildings, claiming that they were in a dilapidated state and inhabited by animals. He said factory and sugar factory workers were not being paid and were in extreme distress due to the government’s actions, adding that his entry into politics was aimed at providing relief to such sections.
Charles Martin said his grandparents worked on a rubber farm for a daily wage of Rs 7 and Rs 3. He said his father took him to school on a motorcycle, which helped him understand the problems of common people, including traveling during rains.
He said that thanks to education, hard work and family support, his family was now in a better position, which motivated him to work for the people and the country. He said families often discourage youth from entering politics, instead pushing them towards professional courses and private employment without questioning the failures of governance.
Charles Martin called on young people to enter politics, saying he saw himself as a world leader and not as someone confined to a closed political space.
Referring to history, he said the region had once been a pioneer in architecture, language, culture, medicine, shipbuilding and trade, with historical accounts of Marco Polo and references to the Chola Navy. He said the current situation marked by deaths due to drinking water problems and healthcare scams must be eradicated.
He said Puducherry could be transformed into a region like Singapore, Denmark, Bhutan or Ireland, warning that failure to act now would leave the Union Territory far behind in the next decade. He said Puducherry had resources, education and youth but lacked guidance.
Charles Martin expressed confidence and said his party would win and turn Puducherry into ‘Singapore’.
