Marking obesity as a big challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the people of India to contribute to the fight against it. He repeated his earlier attraction to reduce edible oil consumption by 10 percent, which is also seen as a step to reduce the import of edible oil in the midst of his call for Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Modi said that, according to experts, one in three people would be obese in the coming years.

“While I talk about fitness, I want to express a concern. Every family in the country should worry that Obesity becomes a big challenge for our country. We have to protect ourselves against obesity,” he said attractive consumers to buy 10 percent less oil for cooking.

Consumption of edible oil in the first quarter (April-June) of the current tax would have been immersed because of various factors, including the prefers of consumers. The drop also coincides with a government campaign to reduce the consumption of edible oil, sugar and salt, using a prime minister’s profession to reduce the use of cooking oil to stay fit.

In India, the annual consumption per head of the population of edible oil is 18 kg and that of sugar is around 20 kg, according to trade data. India had imported 56 percent of its total domestic consumption of edible oil in 2023-24 and dependence increased to more than 60 percent in 2024-25, according to trade sources.

The import of the cooking oil, which also has a direct co-relationship with the domestic demand, fell in April-Yuli with 62.94 LT in the period of 62.94 LT in the period of 62.94 LT) to 52.07 Lakh Ton (LT). Except in June, when imports dropped by only 834 tons, all other months saw a decrease of 17-32 percent.

“It may not be the only reason, but the appeal of modes to reduce 10 percent use of edible oil has certainly contributed that can only be determined via a survey. But there is a general negative sentiment about consumption,” the CEO of a leading brand with edible oil brand said last month.

The Ministry of Agriculture was broadcast for the first time a number of jingles, although FM radio channels in March this year attractive people to lower the consumption of edible oil in which Modi’s attraction was included. Later Fssai started the same campaign by taking sugar and salt in the attraction to stay fit.

The data of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) in 2019-21 show that 24 percent of women and 23 percent of men are overweight or obese in India. It also discovered that 6.4 percent of women and 4 percent of men in the age group of 15-49 are classified as obese. The prevalence of overweight children under the age of 5 has also risen and reached by 3.4 percent.

According to a report from the World Health Organization, the lack of an effective response to the health system to identify excessive weight gain and fat deposits in the early stages of the population, ages the progression to obesity.

The WHO study said that obesogenic environment that worsens the probability of obesity in individuals, populations and in various environments, related to structural factors that limit the availability of healthy sustainable food at locally affordable prices, lack of safe and easy physical mobility in the daily lives of all people and absence of sufficient legal and regulatory environment.
