Plymouth Argyle accept bid for 24-year-old as European club deadline begins News: The72 – Football League News

Plymouth Argyle have accepted a bid from Serbian side FK Vojvodina for defender Kornel Szucs. Plymouth Live.

Plymouth Argyle will be looking to put some distance between themselves and the bottom three in the final third of the season. An improved run took them out of immediate danger, but back-to-back losses leave PAFC with just a five-point lead at the drop zone.

The Pilgrims did most of their recruiting in the summer and there is a lot more consistency in their performances now. A handful of winter deals further strengthened the ranks, with the latest window closing on February 2.

However, the window remains open in Serbia, with their deadline today. Now, Plymouth Live has reported that top flight club FK Vojvodina have launched a successful bid for Hungarian centre-back Kornel Szucs.

Plymouth Argyle starts have been hard to come by for Szucs, but he will now leave permanently. The total of the accepted bid will not be disclosed at this stage.

Kornel Szucs’ reduced role at Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth Argyle FC News

Plymouth Argyle signed Szucs in the summer of 2024 from Hungarian side Kecskemet. He quickly secured a starting place after his arrival and held it for the vast majority of the season.

Although primarily a centre-back, the 24-year-old was occasionally deployed on the right as a wing-back or wing-back. That versatility has served him well, keeping him in and around the team.

However, under Tom Cleverley, Szucs’ minutes have decreased significantly. He started regularly before the injury and then returned to the side for a four-match spell, but has now not started since November.

Szucs’ appearances have been reduced to appearances off the bench and he has been left out of the matchday squad twice. Sanctioning an exit outside the window is a gamble, but PAFC will feel they have enough depth to be able to make money.

Plymouth Argyle’s remaining defensive options

Plymouth Argyle certainly have enough defenders on their books to make a Szucs departure possible. However, there will be some concerns given the injury situation.

July Fold and Brendan Galloway are about to return but have had spells. Youngster Jack Matthews is currently on the books but is unlikely to feature in the first team again.

Wes Harding joined in the winter as a new versatile defensive option. Alex Mitchell and Mathias Ross have been the preferred centre-backs, while Brendan Wiredu has now moved into a more permanent role in central midfield.

Cleverley will feel that, if injuries allow, he has the cover there to sanction Szucs’ departure. However, it is a bit of a roll of the dice given the current figures.

By cashing in on Szucs, you don’t run the risk of him leaving for nothing. It also gives him the opportunity to return to regular action after a supporting role at PAFC this season.
