Pittsburgh took a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning and despite the fact that it was one of the worst teams in baseball, with Paul Skkenes on the hill who felt like it would be enough against a wrestling Reds attack. It was more than enough because the pirates combined for a shutout in a 7-0 win over Cincinnati to start their 4-game series.

The Cincinnati Reds received back-to-back 1-out singles from Matt McLain and Elly de la Cruz in the first half of the 1st inning. Austin Hays then fought with Paul Skkenes for a 9-pitch at bat, but the end results ended the inning when he put himself in a doubles.
The Pirates let them pay for their inability to get through, because in the 2nd of the 1st Bryan Reynolds an opposite home run crushed to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Three straight walks followed and then Jared Triolo went back to the middle to extend the Pirates lead to 3-0. Brady Singer would cause Henry Davis to pop up and end the collection, but his pitch was already 36 in the day.
Cincinnati would again threaten in the first half of the 3rd inning, because two singles brought a man in a score position, but a strikeout would end the inning. In the first half of the 4th Inning-Inning, Gavin Lux joined a 1-out Double, but back-to-back strikeouts would put an end to that threat and Paul Skenes will continue to do the job when he needed it the most.
The Pirates would add to their lead in the second half of the 4th inning when Henry Davis hit to distract the inning and then came to score later in the inning on a base of Spencer Horwitz. Bryan Reynold’s single single with two and put runners on the corner, ending the day of Brady Singer in the process. Sam Moll came in the game to tackle Animal Cruz and let him fly to the Ondiep Center to end the threat.
Brent Ster came out to throw the 6th inning for the Reds and he ran the Leadoff -Hitter and then gave up a single. Pittsburgh would no longer get baserunners, but a fly outside moved to third place and then brought a land from the 5th run of the day of the day when they again expanded their lead.
Ster would return for the 7th and he was burned when Elly de la Cruz could not get neatly with a grounder on the edge of the grass that was ruled. Five throws later, Henry Davis hit a ball that landed four rows deep into the seats in the left field, so that the score was 7-0. Yosver Zulueta then came out of the bullpen and withdrew the side in order.
The Reds would get a lead -off single in the 9th inning of Gavin Lux, but just like any other point in the game, the Cincinnati attack could not do much with it and he would be stranded on the bases while the Pirates held up for the shutout victory.
Important moment of the game
Pittsburgh gives Paul Skenes a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning.
Notes worth mentioning
The Reds had three players with several hits in the game. But they didn’t walk once, threw 11 times and they went 0-5 with runners in scoring position in the game.
On the other hand, the Pirates were only getting a hit than the Reds in the game, but two of their hits were home runs and they walked eight times while they only found five times.
Noelvi Marte threw Andrew McCutchen away on the plate in the 5th inning. That was the first outfield assist of his career.
