Pirates 5, Rockies 1: Avast Me Hearties, another loss

3 minutes, 14 seconds Read

The Colorado Rockies went almost 18 innings scoreless against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but simply avoided their second consecutive shutout because they still lost the game and the 5-1 series on Saturday. They fell to 37-93 in the year with this loss.

There were worries about how long Kyle Freeland the Rockies could give. A persistent blister problem briefly brought his last start, but despite some visible discomfort when throwing a few breaking fields later in his outing, he was able to give the Rockies five innings. He made six strikeouts against the Pirates attack, but they managed five points on seven hits against him, including a few two-runs home runs.

He threw 94 throws, with 56 for strikes. After he has just gone five innings, it keeps the Rockies firm in last place in terms of starting six or more innings with 32.

Freeland’s outing may not look great on the box score, but it is mainly because of two bad fields. The Pirates caused their damage early on at the back of two two-run gayers against the experienced Lefty.

The first came from the Bat of Andrew McCutchen, who continues to terrorize Rockies Pitching. In a 3-2 count, Freeland left a fastball behind the center of the plate on the knees that went in and shot in the left field to give the Pirates the early 2-0 lead in the second inning.

The next inning, Jared Triolo hit a 1-1 fastball and sent it to the left field to turn it into a 4-0 ball game of the Buccos.

The Pirates continued their extra base parade from the night before, with Triolo also gathered a triple while Bryan Reynolds added a double, just like Nick Gonzales.

While the pirate bats brought the power, the Rockies continued to struggle to find their rhythm. Because of the first seven innings they only had three hits, all singles. They gathered three more in the last two, with two of them went for extra bases.

Ryan Ritter gathered a Double to help expand his stroke to 10 games, but it was the two hits of Kyle Karros and the two hits of Brenton Doyle who emphasized the Rockies attack.

With two in the first of the ninth spoiled Doyle de Shutout with his 14th home run of the season. However, it was the only remarkable offensive highlight when the team hit just one walk 13 times and hit 1-out-7 with runners in a score position.

While the attack was struggling, the bullpen did its work again to straighten the ship and threw three scoreless innings, although there was a scary moment. Jaden Hill entered the game in the sixth to illuminate freeland, but only threw two throws after Alexander Canario a ball stood straight back to the hill that hit the armNear the elbow. Warren Schaeffer announced after the game that the X -rays were negative and that it is just a bruise on his forearm.

The defense, on the other hand, had some highlights to help things too.

Doyle made a hip catch in midfield to end the third inning.

Hunter Goodman had a few good throws behind the plate to get runners out, including a captive stealing of Isiah Kiner-Falefa that was confirmed via Replay Review.

Ritter also succeeded in taking a pop-up on a hit-and-run that changed an easy doubles.

Unfortunately, although pitching of the defense and quality lighting can win games, they remain purely clear places, because the attack does not offer the team much help.

The Rockies will try to avoid the Sweep, but it will be a difficult thing to do on Sunday. The match is early, planned at 10:05 am MDT, and the Rockies will compete against Paul Skenes in his home ball park. The Rockies send McCade Brown for his main class debut.
