Pine Acres Golf Course: Northwoods Charm in Abrams

Northwoods charm and prime conditions just off US 41/141

I lived in the Green Bay area for three years growing up and was fortunate to play golf at many of Packerland’s best courses, including top public courses like Brown province, Thornberry Creek near OneidaAnd Royal St. Patrick’s.

Since my parents lived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, I passed the community of Abrams at the highway interchange (US 41 & 141) countless times. During that drive I always caught glimpses through the trees of Pine Acres Golf Course-a sporty circuit directly on the Pensaukee River.

A side view of the 342-yard 4th hole, including the dramatic, rolling green.

This summer I finally stopped and played this Northwoods layout just 20 minutes north of the Green Bay area. I’m certainly glad I did.

Overview

Taking a quick glance at the scorecard, it’s easy to dismiss Pine Acres as not worth visiting. The par-35 layout measures 2,671 yards and does not contain a single bunker. However, avid golfers ignore this spot at their peril.

The 282 yard par 4 6th hole is set over a pond opposite the green.

Pine Acres features a solid, affordable course, with an excellent set of medium-sized greens that rise and fall in all directions. While not exactly Pinehurst No. 2 saucers, the putting surfaces provide plenty of challenge.

Despite heavy rains all summer long, the greens at Pine Acres were in great condition when I played the course in August 2025. The whole place played solid and fast. These are exactly the conditions you like to play golf in, and that is unexpected in such a quiet place.

Highlights and favorite holes

Pine Acres has several solid holes. My favorites were the bookend challenges, the 9th and the 1st.

A final river crossing brings you home to the difficult 190-yard 9th hole.

The 190-yard, par 3 9th is a solid finisher. The hole starts with a good-natured river carry, before ending on a cool green below the clubhouse. Playing the hole, I hit a perfect hybrid 25 feet from the flag and then scored the putt for one of my most satisfying birdies of the year.

The 355 yard first hole, wedged against the bush, is a gentle dogleg left with a beautiful river crossing the tee.

The 355 yard par 4 1st hole is an excellent starter, playing a gentle dogleg across the river. The longest par 4 at Pine Acres then heads uphill to a green set in a natural opening between the pine trees.

Looking back at the beautiful 342 yard 4th hole, with ponds on each side.

But the best hole at Pine Acres is the 4th, a 342-yard par 4, which is still a gentle dogleg. Ponds guard both sides of the tee, so a layup is your best bet. A longer approach, however, will be tested by Pine Acres’ strongest greenery. It slopes sharply from back to front, falls sharply to the left and is guarded on the same side by a beautiful mirror pond.

The 8th is a beautiful, natural hole. Even at 297 yards, it is one of the toughest holes at Pine Acres.

Another hole I liked at Pine Acres was the 297 yard, par 4 8th, which played like a strategic gem. This short par 4 moves hard from right to left, with out of bounds bordering the inside of the dogleg. If you don’t lie down off the tee or onto the corner, a tall oak tree will block your access to the small goal.

Looking back at Pine Acres’ lone par 5, the winding 7th hole is flanked by ponds on the left.

Pine Acres features only one par 5: the 462-yard 7e hole. However, with its winding fairway and beautiful green location, the hole offers sufficient challenge.

The lowlights

Overall, I enjoyed every hole at Pine Acres, including all three fun par 4s under 300 yards, holes 3, 6 and the aforementioned 8th. None of these three holes played easily, or were driveable despite their distance. Each hole required two smart shots to create a birdie opportunity.

The 126-yard 5th hole lacks many defenses, with the exception of the pond on the right and the intersection in front of the green.

If I were to pick one weak spot at Pine Acres, it would be the fifth hole. Although fun and scenic, the 5th plays like an easy par 3 for low handicappers, especially with its large, flat green. However, the 126-yard hole had the potential to be an even better challenge.

Final thoughts

The Green Bay and Appleton areas offer a lot of solid golf options, from the public courses I’ve already mentioned to private gems like Green Bay Country Club, Oneida Country Club and North Shore County Club, all of which are listed on this website. But if you’re looking for something different, or perhaps an easy escape to the Northwoods with the chance to go low, check out Pine Acres.

Plus Pine Acres easily combines with a number of other cheap, fun courses in the area. This includes Patriot Golf Course (formerly Sandalwood) just minutes from Pine Acres and also in Abrams, River Island Golf Club in Oconto Falls, and one of my favorite courses in Wisconsin, Hunters Glen in the nearby holiday resort of Crivitz.

As the calendar turns to fall, it is now football season. Green Bay Packers fans, if you haven’t been there yet Lambeau Fieldor toured around the Title city district, do yourself a favor and just go. A visit to the best home field advantage in the NFL, and the Packers Hall of Fameis an easy day trip from just about anywhere in Wisconsin.

While you explore Titletown, don’t forget to play golf Pine Acres. I’m glad I never did that.

A selfie from the 9th tee at this hidden gem in Packerland. I loved my quick walk around the 2,671 meter layout.
